There is nothing in that swamp for ducks to feed on. The salvinia is so bad that it has replaced duckweed and it also blocks the light for the other better foods to grow

Many formerly good duck holes are going the same way

The hydrology has changed as well. There is no drying out of these places

Salt water killed off a lot of shite around the two lakes. The canals and lack of land building by sediment allowed it to get in and sit.

Fortunately, it is repairable (unlike the coast). Unfortunately, it is being repaired too slowly, so it will continue to deteriorate

I used to hunt in a duck club down blind river in the 90s. Killed mallards almost every hunt. In 2000 somebody set the swamp on fire north of Gramercy. There were birds by the thousands back there in the burnout. That season was something I doubt we ever see again. Didn't take long for the fouchette to take back over and after a couple seasons of nothing but wood ducks, I gave up and started deer hunting.

They just dug 3 new channels off of the diversion canal that go back into the swamp. They are hoping the flow of fresh water will liven up the land a little. Only time will tell

Thats real close to me but the swamp gets deep once my lease starts so i guess it keeps the hogs out because no one sees any. They are all around on the higher properties though.
I havent been in the swamp since last hunting season. With a 1.5 yr old i have to prioritize my activities and fishing trumps hunting.

Nutrients and sediment = good for a tidal swamp or marsh

They were there at the beginning of the end. Massive spoil banks retain plenty water.

Regardless, all these factors put together don't compare to not having annual flooding from the river. I don't see how the swamps could ever recover without it, but I bet one year of it would cause a massive reversal.

It's a shame that knocking down the levee would ruin so many jobs and destroy the states economy as we currently know it, because that levee is what's killing the state.

I just drop my 1.5 year old off at my moms so wife can sleep and I go fish and hunt anyway. she don't really care as long as im around during the week
damn whistlers are everywhere... you could spend an afternoon with a pellet gun picking them off.

Yea, the whistlers ran off the local mallards this summer. Many days I can see 50+ at the house. We have 2 clutches of whistler ducklins around the house also. Those moms don't let anything get within 100 yards of those babies.

Burma turns into a private road there correct? Looks like some nice land. They had a house sitting on a few acres for rent years back over there. I kick myself all the time for never getting into it.

Right, it goes from trashy bypass, then the left is a private road and right is Burma. where that culvert is on Burma is loaded with the sacalaitwhiteperch when it gets cold.

The State, LDWF, etc. desperately need to start using Maurepas as an assimilated wetland system. Pipe is cheap, and Baton Rouge/suburbs could all discharge to Maurepas. It would completely save that place. Problem is large scale mechanical plant firms like CH2MHill et al have political pull and fight assimilation at every step.

quote:

Assimilation wetlands lower nutrient and sediment concentrations in point and non-point source discharges (typically secondarily-treated municipal effluent) while benefiting from inputs of freshwater, increased productivity, and enhanced accretion rates.
