just shot a Browning Buckmark a few weekends ago. it was a blast. Let my 9 yr old shoot it and thats all he wants for Xmas

I would love a buckmark. I'll probably pick up one o those Heritage Rough Rider revolvers from academy though. For under $200 it would be perfect for throwing in the boat dry box and beating around at the camp without worrying about it.

Apologies for the long delay in responding, and thank you to everyone who responded.

1. I do not intend to carry this gun, but I may carry a different handgun in the future.

2. I have limited experience with handguns, but have been to the range about 8 times and shot 1911s made by Kimber, Springfield Armory, and a custom build that belongs to a buddy of mine who is a Marine. I've also shot a Glock 9mm (don't know the model) a Desert Eagle .45, and .357 (don't know the make).

I just enjoyed shooting the 1911 (regardless of the make) more than the others.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have bought the custom built 1911, but it was engraved "USMC" and I haven't earned the right to own that handgun.

3. I will not have a lot of time to shoot over the next year, but I intend to pick up shooting as a hobby.

4. I'll be moving to Texas in 8 months. So, I'm also trying to decide whether to buy now, move, and take the CC class there; or move, get cert., buy...

5. I am willing to spend $1k if that will buy the look and feel that I want, and will last for at least a generation.

Lastly, I have heard from a few buddies that Kimber's quality is not what it used to be. Since I don't know enough, and am not around it enough, I'm just looking for some general feedback on that as well.

Nothing against 1911's... but I am going to throw out the names of two full size guns, that I think you would absolutely love, and that I am intimately familiar with...

CZ-75B

Browning Hi-Power

Both are primarily found in 9mm (my preference), but I think they can be found in .40S&W as well.

If you can find a way to handle and/or shoot either one or both, before you make your purchase, you should try to do so.

Yes, several models of the CZ-75 are available in .40. CZ-97 is a .45

Mr J Evans,
Sounds like you're looking for a general plinking gun, willing to spend up to $1000, won't be carrying concealed this gun, but may do so someday w/ a different gun.

Of course, the #1 plinking gun is a 22 LR. All kinds of great revolvers and semi autos out there. In addition, there are now numerous 1911 style handguns chambered in 22 LR. As far as centerfire plinking guns, the 45 Auto is a fine one, although ammo will cost more than others. (Approx WM prices per 100 rounds of Winchester white box.....9 mm $22, 40 S&W $28, 38 Spec%30 and 45 Auto $35).

The 1911 is a fine gun for plinking and self defense, but it may take more training/practice to learn to shoot it well, compared to the many "point and shoot" guns like the Glock, S&W M&P, Springfield XD, etc.

If you decide you might want to save a little money on your initial handgun, RIA, Citadel, American Classic and ATI all make some fine entry level 1911's. In fact, you could probably buy two of these for less than your $1000 limit. I've been very pleased w/ my Citadel and American Classic.
