Take a look at the new Smith & Wesson Bodyguard 2.0 .380 and the Shield EZ in 9mm or .380, both have a manual safety option which is a good idea for someone new to shooting and carrying.

Testing by someone of multiple rounds and types of ammunition.
The article you just posted says that a rifle is better for home defense over a pistol.

Overall for Home Defense: 4.5/5
The SBR/Pistol or carbine sized AR15 is one of the absolute best defensive weapons to have at your disposal for home defense.
While there are cons to the platform, especially with the muzzle report in smaller rooms, overall for performance the AR15 is hard to beat in comparison with the handgun or shotgun.

An AR or Shotgun is long, heavy and much harder to use than a small striker fired weapon. Especially in tight quarters under stress and usually in low light situations. That’s the obvious off the top of my head. The tactical training folks I know with wives and daughters also leave AR’s /rifles in the safe and have them all trained with 9mm pistols or revolvers
So many people get into the argument of what’s best for a “battle”. More than likely nobody is going to battle and one or two shots will be enough to “win” the fight. When I say win the perp leaves either dead or scared.
I live in country/suburbia an a pistol gives you the ability to stick your Glock inside your pajama pants or sweatshirt pocket to go investigate the car that’s pulled into your driveway at dusk that turns out to be a contract amazon delivery driver.
I really don’t see myself getting into a Scarface situation and if I do I’ll go to the safe and get the appropriate guns and rip off a few lines of preworkout and sit back and wait. For everything else my g43x with a light is sufficient.

It also shows over penetration by rifle and more so than all others.
Here is one thing I really don't understand.
Are houses in LA not brick laminate? So few houses here are not brick that I just don't see over penetration is an issue unless all the bedrooms are on one floor (which mine are not).
A rifle, pistol nor a shotgun slug will be penetrating all that.

where would you start for a handgun for a female?
Full size 9mm with 15+ rounds. For my wife I have an Sig Sauer P226 in 9mm. It doesn’t have a safety, and for a woman in a panic in a home against an invader I think that is a good thing.
380 is not enough power and those guns are so tiny that they have killer recoil. 45acp is too much recoil and the guns are heavy. 9mm is where it’s at for a woman.
Do some research on the top 5 9mm full size handguns and then go to a firing range and rent all 5 of them. Then pick the one you like the best.
If you are going to concealed carry, look into an sig sauer p365 and a Springfield hellcat. Slightly smaller and can hold 15 rounds.

An AR round is FMJ and fast. It’s going through just about anything
Who’s shooting FMJ for defense or anything else besides range time?

Over penetration I am worried about is in interior of the house into a room my kids are sleeping. Not into another house.
I am a plan and think about as many situations so know where I can and cannot shoot and what angles are safer.
Have all guns but grab a 45 or sig 320 9mm when hear bumps in the night form pistol safe on dresser or from office pistol safe depending on where I am.

Sister has the .380, bought a 30 super carry "for the wife". Both really fun, easy, non-intimidating guns. I don't like the duplicate safeties (grip and trigger), buy that's just me

I bought the performance center for my gal. Ended up swapping the grip safety out for one from NDZ performance, it's lower profile and feels a good bit better. Hers doesn't have the trigger safety.
