Yes, that was a great video. I'm liking the S&W for the barrel swap out option.

And you are somewhat correct about the time at the range. I usually go once every 3 months and burn a couple boxes. I still want something of quality though.

That would actually be very good for you and your wife. If you have to leave and she may be the only one using it, you can stoke it with 9mm HPs. But then again, if you plan to do this a lot, it may make more sense to get an M&P9 from the get-go.

It's really up to you. But if you want "something of quality" you can't go wrong with an M&P.

Check out my M&P40 review if you haven't already. Apex Tactical makes a great aftermarket trigger that really transforms the gun. It's only shortcoming is the factory trigger IMO. The ergonomics and general feel are perfect.

Go with your wife to a gun store and hold a few different pistols. The Walther PPQ is also a great option that you mentioned.

What's wrong with a 40???

This board has a legit hatred for the 40. They say it's "snappy" or something.

I had once guy on here try and tell me the 40 can kill. Not that it was an ineffective killer, just that if you were shot with it you wont die.

I have a Sig P229 and love it. I have owned the Glock 23, but I much prefer the Sig.

My nightstand gun is a HK p30s in .40. You can find a non-safety one in .40 pretty reasonable.

the 40 is it is the lightest caliber I want to go, that the wife could shoot someone with if she had to.

This probably won't interest you, but I'd look at Taurus's line of medium to full-sized .40s. The one I shot seemed tamer than the Glock 9 I tried.

If your heart is set on a .40 (which, as has been said, is a crappy choice in caliber for women, and for most men), by all means get the M&P.

The M&P weapon platform was designed around//for the .40 cartridge --- meaning it will be the most realiable M&P you can get (assuming you get a full size pistol and not one of the compact models).

As KR said, the Glock 9mm is a better choice (again, assuming you don't buy a subcompact G26). The Glocks were designed around the 9mm luger cartridge, and there is no more reliable "out of the box" handgun on this planet. {Yes, there are some handguns that are almost as reliable, but none that are more reliable.}

With today's really good 9mm ammo, such as the Federal HST, you get performance that .40's and .45's couldn't deliver just a few years ago.

I have test fired 9mm HST at the crime lab of a well known State Police agency out of my carry piece (G19). Each bullet expanded uniformly (nice, even petals) and each bullet had a final diameter of .83 inches (i.e. .83 caliber).

The OP's wife will be well protected with a 9mm if (a) the gun is reliable, (b) she has good ammo and (c) she can do her part by hitting the target.

And I'll wager a substantial amount that she will shoot the 9mm better than the .40, assuming she shoots two guns that are identical except for the caliber. (By "shoot better" I'm referring to getting accurate hits at a faster cadence).

I have Glock 23. Absolutely can hole punch with it. Very accurate and not a desert eagle .50 recoil some on here make it out to be.

But I agree with many on here that you need to shoot several calibers and find what you like.

It also depends on the gun itself. I much rather shoot my G23 than my LCR in .38 special

Get a glock 20. No kick and easy to handle full size pistol without a button safety. 10mm>.40

G19
But if 40 is really what you want then G23. 40 cal then drop in 9mm barrel or 357sig barrel. 3 in one
