Marlin model 336C in .35 remington.

Best close quarters whitetail rifle on earth.

ETA: With a 2-7x32 leupold sitting on top of it.

I'd argue a scope may not be needed if he's shooting that close.

I'd argue that a 2 power scope is the best shite ever for a close shot. Much better than a peep or open sights or anything. The deer would have to be halfway between the scope and then end of your barrel for you to not be able to see the whole deer.

Trust me, I make my living on 10 yard shots with a rifle

I think see through mounts are the stupidest things on the face of the earth.

Just get a 2-7 scope. I don't think people realize how wide the field of view is at 2x, and just how little zoom that is. Much quicker target aquisition than with open sights because all you focus on is crosshairs and the deer, not a front sight, a back sight, and the deer. One whole thing less you have to look for when you shoot.

You can seriously take a 2 power scope, point it at your feet, and see them clearly. I've hunted in the swamp with open sights, see through mounts, a peep sight, fixed 4x scopes, 3-9 scopes, and even a 4-12 scope once. Nothing comes close to being as handy and simple as a 2-7x32 scope ontop of a short lever action except for a shotgun with buckshot and one bead.

The old wives tale that faster and smaller profile bullets deflect more than larger and heavier bullets has been proven false many times over. Your 7mm is fine for virtually any North American big game animal.

There is something very nostalgic about shooting a lever or single shot big bore. I put my 300 WBY down each season for a little time with my 45/70 lever.

Have you started reloading yet? It is extremely addicting.

My favorite thing about it, is that you won't ever have to say "the store was out of (insert caliber here)." You always have a plentiful supply...

... unless you shoot it all.

Woods Rifle

Browning BLR I had one in 308 as a kid. Great rifle.

I would look at the Lightweight Takedown with Pistol Grip in 308 with a scout type scope.

You are so wrong. You can bypass the scope completely with iron sights. I once killed a deer at 170 yards with irons because my scope was fogged up, so I just used the iron sights.

Also, you can use it at any time, like while making drives in heavy brush. Kinda like using a shotgun, but with a lot more range
