My generator is almost 17 years old, I'm looking for another one, between 6,500-9,000 watts. But what I am noticing is that most of the generators I see now have metal gas tanks.
My old Briggs & Statton has a plastic tank, I have had practically zero issues with it, I actually stored gas in it for almost 3 years before I used it for Ida. I do put stabil in the fuel and run the carburetor dry each time I do use it. ANY how, are there any generators out there that have plastic gas tanks anymore? I think metal gas tanks will rust during storage.

on tanks bigger than a certain size EPA now requires metal tanks. They have a vent tube that goes to a carbon canister to catch the vapors. Then the vacuum on the tank draws the vapors back into the system. I have a Champion Model 100110 (11,500 starting, 9,200 running) and it's been great for the last 4 year.

Agree with speckled tiger. The smaller ones and inverters have plastic from what I’ve seen

Speckled, I ordered that same generator. Are you running it on gasoline or did you happen to convert to natural gas? And is it loud like a typical open generator?

Gasoline only. I don't have natural gas at my house unfortunately. Yea, it's loud. I don't really notice it in the house when the window unit running and the kids playing though. Just becomes white noise.

I have the same unit. It runs my 4 ton central unit and all lights, internet, etc. Its a little quieter than my old 6500w troy bilt. Im a little nervous about the metal tank also. I will drain it in a few weeks after hurricane season ends.

Joe
Do you have a soft start on your AC?

I have the same one Joe has and did not add a soft start or hard start. It runs my entire house and only reached about 50% load capacity. This was during my 5hr break in period. I’ve yet to need it for a storm here in MS. I still may add the soft start kit down the road.

I added a hard start for now but will add a soft start in the future. The hard start did help a lot. It runs at about 50% load with the ac running.

How do you handle the metal gas tank? Any thing special like sea foam or stabil in the gas, or do you drain the tank dry while in storage? I thought that the plastic gas tanks were a stroke of genius.

I use stabil in the tank and let it run for an hour or so every 2 months. Of course, I run the carb dry before putting it away. It's stored indoors with the dust cover so humidity and rain isn't an issue either. So far, it looks like the day it came out the box.

I don't need a new one but I've been looking at the Firman tri-fuel one that costco sells

Other option would be to convert my current one to tri-fuel, but I think money may be better spent upgrading.

One issue with propane or NG is the reduced power ratings, so keep that in mind if you are looking at alternative fuels

I bought a Firman tri-fuel Saturday from Costco. I plan to run natural gas but the ability to run regular gas is a nice backup. My boss had it running his house minus the central air on natural gas.
