Trying to help my brother find a light kicking rifle for his son to shoot. The little guy is just that - little. He wants to hunt, and my brother wants to get him into it, but he's just afraid to let him shoot too much rifle.

We figure 243 is the way to go. Suggestions?

Tried searching for old threads but didn't see much.

.243 is definitely the way to go. That's what my brothers and I all started with and the little winchester youth model we have has taken more deer than any of our .270s

All depends on the type of rifle you want to spend money on...and exaclty what light kicking means to the boy. A good quality rifle with some weight to it will have less kick then say a cheaper plastic rifle like a rossi ot something along those lines....but..223/243/and the 7mm-08 seem to be the standard calibers for little ones.

.243 is what I used to shoot when I was a lad.

My uncles started me off with a .223 and a .243. But my dad just bought a 7mm-08 and it has no kick either.

.243 for sure. Still love my .243 and will definitely pass it on to my (hopeful) son.

I'm going to use mine next season just to get it out the box again. It's been passed from my dad to my brother to me. So I figure I should use it from time to time.

7mm-08 with the Remington managed recoil ammo. My nephews have been dropping them for a few years with it.

My little brother has a .243 and I love shooting that thing. Never lost a deer he shot with it either, or had to track it very far.

Really can't go wrong with any of the calibers mentioned in this thread

Judge is the answer. But it's hard to get close enough to shoot a deer in the face.

My nephew was shooting a 270. Win with the rem managed recoil rounds when he was 8.

7mm-08, .25-06, 6.5x55 swede, .44 magnum, a couple of other oddball rounds

I don't like the .243 for a kid. Been on to many bloodtrails with no blood due to the bullet blowing up on the shoulder blade. I think it's good for people who can shoot very well, but not for kids. I think .25-06 is the minimum for a young kid.

I grew up on a 6.5x55 and I'm still pilling up deer with it.

ETA: 7mm-08 is what I would most strongly recommend for a number of different reasons that would take me all night to type.

Between the expandables and .243s, I'm surprised you're not tripping over bones every time you hunt.

I have a damn good blood dog. They all die and he finds them all, but there's never much of a blood trail. Does nasty stuff to the inside of them but does no good if you can't find them.

I've never had a deer run over 25yds with my .243 but then again I tend to shot for them to fall right there.
