Hammer and Downfloor. Yeah that was what I meant about not knowing what the future holds. I know a lot of pipeline leases are all over La. I definitely want to learn the leupold system in and out (and ammo capabilities and habits with this gun) this year before deer season next fall, as hopefully I will find a new lease wherever I end up wherever I end up for work.
But like you said, I'm used to shorter shots so I definitely will need to learn and practice for longer shots. I am not into trying to just shoot far shots at a deer and hoping its a good shot and ending up just wounding a deer. Passed up quite a few in my years with the old 3030 because I didn't want to risk it being unethical. I've heard of people just "aiming high and hoping for the best," but that is not something I would do unless I can learn the scope and adjust accordingly (then you wouldn't really even need to aim high in the first place).
Guess a rangefinder needs to be added to my 2022 wishlist of items I'm saving for.
ETA: have zero idea on where to start with a decent cheap rangefinder but I'll deal with that rabbit hole later.

I'm in basically the same place. I never really considered shooting past 300 yards even though my place has some really long opportunities. I just never saw the need to try. I saw a really nice buck last year at about 450 yards and didn't take a poke at it, but if I had been properly prepared I could have gotten him.
The vx3hd 3-9 is almost exactly what I've been wanting, would rather a TMR reticle, but whatever. It's in the mail now, so we'll find out shortly how it goes.

Leupold is just like all other scope manufacturers.
There are two systems.
MIL or MRAD
or MOA
Mil/MRAD = milradians.
MOA = Minute of angle
With either, you need to have a reasonably decent idea of how fast the bullet is moving when it exits your scope.
With my 6.5 creedmoor, I know a 140 gr bullet is moving right at 2800 fps. My scope is MIL/MRAD. At 600yds I need to click to 3.5. That's approximately 60" (if I remember correctly) of drop at that distance.

ETA: new app software came out today. Hopefully it's more stable that the previous.

How do you like it? I’ve been wanting to get one. I have no idea how fast my x bolt is throwing the .300 win mag. 26” bbl with Thunder chicken. Need to get some numbers so I can order my CDS from leupold.

That is what I was going to get but they had a 3.5x10 (50) for $480 and the 40s were like $400 so I just went with it. Might regret not getting more than 3.5x10 but idk, you live and learn and I'll see how this plays out. I doubt this will be the last Leupold I buy and if I ever get a really nice new rifle in a larger caliber, I'd assume I'd put something higher than the vx3 on it. But for now I am happy with it.
Let me google TMR reticles. Mine is just a normal recitcle but I think it illuminates only when picked up but I'm not sure. Wouldn't that require a battery? Maybe mine doesn't, I would almost rather it be illuminated at all times and not have to deal with that going out eventually, if that is how that works.
@Bbvdd. Yeah I had been researching that on youtube. I saw a lot of gripes about some manufactures putting both MOA and MIL (I think it was called) on the same scope.
Thanks for all the help guys, I am gonna try to sight it in this weekend and will probably be reporting back with more questions. I'm more excited to pattern the new SBE3 and my dads/mine SBE2 and figure out if I need to shim the 3, or if it is shooting high, just learn to deal with it. I wish there was a decent skeet shooting venue around still. I think I still have the plastic thrower and some old boxes, might have to get back into that but it always threw me off on duck hunting if I shot too much skeet close to duck season.

I bought a 2x7 33mm vxII. I bought it 40 years ago used. I mounted it on a rifle I rarely used and swapped it to my sons new rifle a few years ago. Gun shop mounted it for me and couldn’t bore sight it. Told me I needed to call Leupold.
I called them and they said send it in and they would look at it. About 3 weeks later i got a package back from them. I opened it up and it was a brand new one.
I don’t know how you could top that.

AOFar. I could be wrong, but I believe this company started as golfing rangefinders; and have moved down into the hunting world.
Do a bit of research and see what you think. Some models can also detect speed like a radar gun.
I bought the 1200t model (up to 1200yds), unfortunately I didn’t realize until after the purchase this model does not have the radar gun capabilities. I was so looking forward to drinking beer on the front porch and checking the speed of my neighbors as they fly by
As far as accuracy, it’s +/-1yd when compared to Nikon side by side. Plenty good enough. It was around $130 total including taxes and shipping.

It’s great. Easy to set up and get running. Very accurate. I highly recommend the Piet trigger if running a can.

Thanks for the rec. I don't want to spend much on one but it would be useful to have if you ever were to need to take a long shot, or got good with working the turnet dial system on the scope. I knew of a few brands but I'll add this to my prosceptive 2022 savings wish list.
Starting to look more like a 2022-2030 wish list.

Nows the time to be surfing the classifieds on rokslide, snipers hide, long range hunters /etc.
People are steady upgrading and selling off their "old" but damn near new last years stuff.

Okay sweet I’ll have to get one.
Is the Piet trigger because the can puts the chrono too far away from you?

I own a lot of guns but the one I really regret letting go of is my .270 BAR with Boss recoil reducer. They are pretty hard to find around here now.

Haven’t had to use their customer service but I sure love my vx5hd 2-10-42 on my 6.8.
Planning to buy a vx6 to put on my 308 next year .

It’s a great investment. You’ll use it more than you think. One thing I do each year is put markers along the wood line from my stands: 100yd, 200yd, 250yd, 300yd. That way there’s no fiddling with the RF when a big one walks out.
You will be absolutely amazed at the 200, 250, and 300yd markers. 3 deer could walk out at the same time at each of those distances, and if the markers aren’t there, they look like they’re standing side by side even though they’re 50yds apart.
Highly likely the reason ppl miss so often at these distances while hunting, because their distance estimates are way off.

That is a great idea. I went to pattern the SBE2, 3 and A5 and do a preliminary 25 yards and 100 yards grouping with the leupold and 270. both sets of 3's were about a triangle and inch apart at 25 yards and the same basic grouping just a little lower and to the right (one went through the same hole) at 100. I'm low by about 1.5" and to the right about 1.5-2". My buddy came with and was shooting his ak's (one in 9mm which was awesome), but I didn't mess with the dials, I figure I'll go alone to sight it in when I have more time, but good to see where its at right now. (I need a vice or something) I was just shooting off a sandbag.
P.S. the SBE3 is shooting high (manufactured in 2020) but I will fix it for duck season. I put a jug up taped to my target and at about 35 yards perched the bead, like I was shooting open sights on a rifle, under the jug and it killed the jug. Maybe I'll just learn to shoot low with it. The SBE2 was about 70/30 at 40 yards with steel, and the A5 was about 60/40 or 50/50 at the same with the same 3" drylock (there were in a bag to keep from getting wet and didn't say the shot size, probably 4's).
ETA: went down the rabbit hole with the shotgun info. But I did want to double check, do I want to take the cds cap off when I actually start dialing? Then put it back on at 0? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of having them make the custom cds turrent? I was reading a thread about leupold sighting in from a few pages back and it got me wondering.

Yes. Once it’s sighted in. That way if the dial is accidentally turned, you’ll notice, and simply put it back to zero.
Leave the caps on while dialing after it’s zeroed.

Ok, I'm just an idiot lol. My instructions were basically for all their models and have a bunch of info about features mine doesn't even have. But I got it shooting and grouping real close at 100 without doing anything but bore sighting it at the shop with that little thing they put in the end of the barrel. I'm gonna go back to zero it in when I'm not out there with friends wanting to shoot their stuff too. I'll have to remember to bring the little Allen key to take off the CDS cap.
I'm just confused that if you can do that, then what is the point of getting the custom one made and mailed to you?

The custom dial is abbreviated for yardage of the specific bullet you give them. The dial it comes with is in MOA
