Yeah even with the higher rings, this thing is nearly touching the barrel. This tikka has an interesting barrel where its fat and the tapers real fast into a slim barrel but its still sort of fat where the scope front end.

Shooters starting shooting long range and turning turrets. The old Leupolds wouldn’t take the adjustments. A lot of former customers switched to scopes that would take the adjustments and return to zero.
I’ve always had good luck with Leupold, but I wasn’t trying to shoot 1,000 yards with them.

And consequently, you must shoulder the rifle differently. That’s why I like small objective scopes and low rings.

Yeah I'm happy with it for now. It's not the only whitetail pew at my disposal and knowing me, I'll impulse buy more before next season.
ETA: but to each their own. I wouldn't mind having a variety of different scoped ones to choose from eventually.

I’ve got a leupold with an adjustable turret ARMod-1 3x9x40. Just killed a deer at 317yd. Simply set the dial at 300, aimed dead on, and she dropped. Was quite impressed as that was the first time I’ve used it on game.

I'm in that rabbit hole now. So you zero in the torrent that comes with it at 100 yards, then send them the information and they mail you a new one for the specific ammo you use and replace it?

Every piece of glass I look through is Leupold. Binos are going back in for the first time in ten years because I treat them like crap.

Yes zero it for a hundred yard zero, order the reticle giving them the bullet you intend to use and then just dial to the yardage. You get one free custom dial when you buy a vx3 for sure then they are like 65$ I think. If you change bullets or grain or load the reticle may not be accurate or could be.
The moa dial you just dial the moa you need for that particular load at the ranged distance.

Many thanks. That is what I am thinking. I have a few boxes of Federal 130 gr (270) but I mainly grabbed them to have some extra. I guess ill sight it in with them then try to find some hornady or decide if I like the federals before I do it. I only want to have to do it once, so I want to make sure I figure out what ammo works best. thanks you though.

This and they never changed their adjustments to match the reticles. The mil-dot is a mil reticle as was their TMR. Their adjustments on the knobs were MOA. It took them years to offer M5 mil knobs on their mark 4 scope and by that time everyone had just kind of passed them by. None of this really affected the hunting world though.
And its still funny because they still attempt to sell the mark 4 scope with mismatched adjustments for $1000.
Its almost a joke.

Yea that part of the hate is very much justified. They have so much product that's so close to being fantastic but each one seems to have something stupid about it. Mil/moa setup, or no FFP option, or only duplex reticle, etc etc.
Its better now, but for example I want a mark 3 3-9, but its only available with old school mil dot. Why not put the TMR????

Ya, Id never seen that Mark 3, looks like a good scope. They should have put the TMR in it first.

quote:I had this scope but crushed the front objective in my ATV gun boot. I wish I had a happy story about the free replacement. They charged me $100 parts and labor to repair it. I left it sitting on my coffee table too long and someone else got a free scope. I thought maybe I had misplaced it so I did everything trying to find it. I searched the entire house every couple months, even bought a new one and it didn't show up, then we gutted the house after the flood and it still didn't show back up.

The 4-12 comes with a TMR and parallax know.
Some of the product line decisions they make are just strange.

Exactly. You can zero at any distance, and they’ll customize the dial to fit the specs you send them.

ETA: My dial is customized to 180g REM core lokt psp. I’ve shot 150 & 180g psp and sp using both REM and Winchester ammo with no noticeable difference inside 225yd.
You’ll need to take into account windage beyond 250-300yds

Yeah. I used to be a hater, but...they make quality stuff, have great customer service, and a lot of their stuff is significantly lighter than comparable options.

Yeah, historically I haven't hunted places with more than 250 yard shots tops. Idk what the future holds but I figure it'll be the same and within 150 yards a slightly different grain or brand shouldn't make too much difference. I have always just grabbed whatever box off the shelf and shot deer with them and never noticed any differences with other guns and scopes as they were all close shots.

Understood. When you get the custom dial, you'll definitely have an itch to test the accuracy on longer shots, even if it's just target shooting. And I'd highly recommend it, so you'll have real world experience on its limits.
Just remember windage, and look up the drift of your chosen ammo at distance.

You never know. South Louisiana is littered with pipelines. Your next place might have abundant 600 yard shot opportunities.
