Hogs have been showing up at my pow pow's property lately, he shot two from the front porch not too long ago with his .357 lever action. I want to build a figure 6 hog trap but I'm only up there every other week during deer season for a few days at a time. If i supplied these hogs with feed and water would it be a bad idea to leave them in the trap for 2 weeks at a time.

Concerns:
hogs dig out
hogs die

Or would it be best to just set the trap when I'm there and let the hogs use the trap freely at other times?

We had a thread about a pretty badass remote hog trap the dude watched from his smart phone, or iPad.

I'll look for it.

I would keep your traps baited during the week with the trap open. Then when you're there on the weekend, set it.

Yep, let them get use to the trap.

No offense but this entire thread reminds me of those old "you might be a redneck if" jokes. For example- if you have ever said my pow pow shot two hogs from his porch with a .357 lever action......you might be a redneck!

What they said. Set up the trap but leave it open and just feed them for a couple weeks then when you're up there go ahead and set it. Make sure the little one's can continue to come in pushing on the entrance. You gotta catch em all the first time because after that they're gonna be trap shy. You'll still find a dumb one here and there afterwards but it gets harder. Especially if you kill them in the trap or they die there from the heat.

We've killed 23 in the same trap over the last 4 days. All shot in the trap. Take it FWIW.

I have seen it both ways. I have seen them trap shy and not touch or get close to it and I have seen them keep piling in.

How do you go about NOT shooting them in the trap?

Either rope them and pull them in a trailer. Or have a chute to load them in a trailer.

I really dont know but I would build a chute.

Depends on what pen it is. Some pens we have you can jump over into them with a piece of plywood.

We also have one that is made on a small 4 wheeler trailer that we can also use to butt it up to the other pens and run them into.

This all depends on the size of the pigs in them too. You may have to rope one and have someone hold him while someone else jumps in and grabs his back legs.

Different techniques in different situations.

the trailer makes sense. Roping them sounds fun too

I've got one that we let some die in many years ago that they won't go into to this day and I'm too lazy to move it so there we sit at a standoff.

Get a big trackhoe with the log thumb on it. Just pickem up and drop in trailer
