I have Kistler KLXs, Heliums and one Z Bone. They're all too expensive now.

And while I'm at it, I was at the Houston Boat show this weekend. I saw top of the line Ranger, Vexus and Skeeter bass boats. So let me try to wrap my brain around 10 to 20% down 240 month loans at 4.99% for 97 to 105 thousand dollar boats. Crazy man!

You can get somebody to build you some damned fine sticks from Mudhole components for $200 a piece. Spined correctly and balanced for the style fishing they will be used for,

Disappointing when picking up a $300 rod and the spine is 90 degrees off or a crank bait rod that’s so butt heavy it takes effort to hold the tip down

My SO got a friend of ours to make me a spinning rod from a blank he bought for drop shot use but was too light. It's now my favorite UL rig and he still hasn't balanced it yet.

Do you have a link? Definitely in the market for a few rods sounds like a good idea

Which blanks? I've read pretty mixed reviews on most of their blanks.

And how do you go about finding a rod builder? Facebook?

For the KLX you might keep it as a Chatterbait rod with a super high speed reel and braid. Most of the fish you lose with a Chatterbait are from setting the hook to hard and with a high speed reel 8.1 or higher and braid paired with this rods you should be good to go. I have a lot of Kistler rods with most of them being the heliums-probably close to 20 heliums, a few Argon’s KLX’s and a couple Z-bones. But as some others have mentioned you can usually catch them on sale. You can also message some of their pro staff who will sell a bunch of them at the end of the season.

I also picked up some Hammer Rods at a tournament in Alabama recently that to me have a lot of value for the cost. I would put Rick Morris’ RPM rods in that category as really well made for the price. Rick will usually give you a discount code if you shoot them a message. If you like bigger name rods, the G Loomis E6X rods can usually be had for $100 on sale if you pay attention and at that price point I think they are a steal. I also don’t agree with the poster that said Trey Kistler is not a good guy. He’s always been very good to me but I buy a lot of rods from them…

I've got the expride 610M glass for chatterbaits and just don't lose fish on it so I doubt I'll change that. I'm hoping the klx will do good with mid size spinnerbaits and some lipless. In general, I doubt I'll buy another kistler below the Helium line. The klx and down don't have the action I like for non-moving bait applications and honestly paying close to $300 for rods with those actions isn't worth it to me.

For bottom contact baits or baits that need the right action rod, I'll pay up for fast or xfast, but for Mod Fast and mod rods, you can find really good value at lower price points in my experience.

I have a couple that I use inshore that I like. Academy was running the discount for $100 but that was a while back. I haven't seem them at that price again.

From what I understand, the E6X is on its way out if not already gone. Maybe a few left hanging around but I think GCX pushed it out the door. The inshore line may be different.

Falcon from the low end to the top end is by far my favorite whether it’s their saltwater or freshwater rods.

They've always been quality and have good offerings for both inshore and bass.

My friend made the two on the right for me for $200 a piece. I'm no pro or an amateur. But I can hold my own with the ditch pickles. I swear I can fell a leaf on the bottom with those rods. Both MHX blanks and 7'3" medium heavy worm rods. Which were perfect. Micro guides of course.

High end is a relative term in a way. American made blanks are not equal quality dollar for dollar to foreign blanks. This means a $150 overseas rod could be equal to or better than a $200-250 American made rod. Warranties add greatly to the price of rods as well. Again, the more expensive may or may not be of "better materials". I am not a rod breaker so I have never worried about warranties.

At $150-$200, I have never fished a better rod than the new Powell Max and Endurance rods. Nothing has come close in the same price point. I have heard very good things about Halo Rods. I may give one of them a try.

Oh no doubt. Labor, blanks, guides and warranties are the biggest cost factors and no 2 rods are alike in how their price is determined. Some companies (particularly kislter but I know other ones do as well) sell essentially the same rods but with different guide trains at price points that vary by as much as $100 or more.

So it's all an apples to oranges comparison when we talk about these rods. And also, what's important to each angler. Even something specific like recoil guides will divide people into camps and make a high end rod desirable or not.

My buddy quit making them but my camp neighbor has been bragging on some he had built. Next time he’s down I’ll check them out, quality and price, to see if we got something. I’ll let you know if it’s worth a shot

I’ve got 5 mag tapers, 1 elite x and one point blank he built. For the money I’d go mag tapers all day. Never had a problem and they will do the deal at least as well as the more expensive stuff I have. What I like most is they all feel the same

30 year old 6 foot Berkeley Lightning rod.
32 year old Abu Garcia 5500C.

Have caught more bass than I care to count using it.

It’s not the rod or the reel. It’s the skill using it.

Your mileage may vary.

People catch bass on Zebco spincasters; I'm not sure why you wasted money on a fancy Abu Garcia.

The old cane pole ain't too shabby neither.

But I digress... to each his own. I fully admit getting nice expensive gear just makes me feel better about my fishing. In the same way the $1500 Leica binos I have make me feel about hunting and the $300 hand hammered carbon steel skillet make me feel about cooking. It's a splurge. A luxury item. And I'm pretty unabashed about that. You don't get the return on the investment in terms of fish catching production.

For me, I like to fish too much and get to fish too infrequently for me to wish I had better gear. At least I know the things I can control I've done my best to ensure are the top of the line. After that, it's all up to the fishing gods.
