I know we have an "official AR" thread. If this has been done, link me, I'd like to read it. Short of that, here is the premise.

The trigger thread got me interested in putting together another AR. I've only purchased complete AR's and I'd like to try to piece one together as I hear it can be more rewarding and lower the overall cost. Please make recommendations including links for the best bang for the buck parts to build a quality AR at a value price. Up vote good deals/parts and down vote bad deals or parts you think there may be better options for.

I'll reserve the second post to begin linking all of the parts as we agree on what constitutes the official OB AR.

Make sense? Any questions?

ETA: I think it would be understood, but Milspec so we are on the same page.

Seems like a lot to wade through. I know we have an "official AR" thread. If this specific idea has been done, link me, I'd like to read it. Short of that, here is the premise. Compile a mutually agreed parts list for an official OB AR.

You don't have to participate if you don't want to.

I have no experience with them but have read a bunch of glowing reviews:

Rosco 16"

I have an 80% lower on the last one that I built. After some issues with the barrel I have really become a fan:

I have several Midwest Industries handguards and really like them.
This one is on sale:

10.5" m-lok for $134

I like Magpul furniture:

Magpul ACS

Don't have one of these but they look pretty cool:

MFT Minimalist Stock

I've been wanting to build one, but it seems like a daunting task to me for some reason. If it can be screwed up I'd certainly screw it up. Would be cool to do an OB "group" build. I support.

i guess but the thing is, you got economical builds and you got expensive builds and everything in the world in between. You have to make this build somehow special to stand out.

i'm sure you're stupid thread will cost me $800 soon enough.

I do have some parts that i'll have that I will be building a 3rd ar 15 soon enough. Just trying to figure out on my end what i want the purpose of this third build to be or what to do differently.

That's where I'm at. So many choices for so many parts. It's hard to find a consensus.

I'm not talking anything over the top, just best bang for the buck.

It really isn't that bad at all.

Roll Pin Punch Set:

Upper block

Not necessary but makes things so easy:
Pivot pin tool

You will need a torque wrench for the barrel. Most Free float handguards come with their own proprietary barrel nut and barrel nut wrench

Not even close to true

Assuming we are going to chamber in 5.56, here is the barrel:

Now that's a solid idea.

I get it though, we may never come to a consensus on every part. I just think it would be cool to come up with a "here is what you need" parts list. I've never seen it all itemized in one place.

And for the record, I've never built one. I've taken mine apart down to removing the bolt carrier and trigger for cleaning, but I don't really know every spring or pin that is needed. I'd like to learn.

Clyde, we gotta try to keep this thing organized. Discuss one part at a time maybe. I don't want to get lost
