My first time archery hunting. I've elk hunted in CO 5 times, but with a rifle and a muzzle loader once. Killed a 5x5 my 3rd year after missing a 6x6 the previous year (advice, bring a range finder).

My buddy is gonna buy an archery over-the-counter and I'm gonna call for him the first couple of days to see how much activity and action we see. If it's on, I'll buy a tag also.

We should be there at the peak of the rut. Bringing 2 mules to ride and most importantly, to pack out meat if we're successful. Gonna be a new moon also and the forecast looks good. Should be alot of bugling.

I'll post pics and story when I return.

The elk were just starting to bugle last week. Heard a few around Copper mountain up high on the mountain. A friend hiking in southern Colorado said they could hardly sleep in the tent with all the bulls making noise.

Good luck.

That's where we're headed. South of Pagosa Springs, Navajo Peak area.

I got lucky years ago and started going with a buddy that had been several times. Just gotta find someone to "show you the ropes".

We hunt National Forest and do the whole trip for less than $1500 a piece.

To satisfy their wives while they're gone I suppose.

Very cool. This is something I'd love to do in the future. Can't wait to read about the trip and gear involved. Good luck.

Sounds awesome! I have been twice during archery season twice and it is pretty rough to get them in close enough for a good bow shite. Good luck, your heart will be racing when that big animal gets so close to you!

Good luck!

Be sure to journal as much as you can on your trip. You might be helping out the next OBer when he gets a chance to go and the do's and don'ts from your experience would help.
