1.5 hours from Lafayette to Big Lake, rent some boats and learn to fish our water. I left them biting yesterday evening with less than a limit but my peeps had plenty of fish and fun. Since when does "Whining" mean you're using logical reasoning?
I will suggest that guides no longer get to keep their limit and most of my clientele would be fine with that.

Everyone knows a guide on Big Lake. Ask him off the record if he catches more big trout since the reduction.
How many guides were targeting trophy trout on big lake 25-30 yrs ago and how many are there today?
Print and Internet documentation of locations and techniques often lead to copy cat behavior by everyone who reads. What one or 5 people were doing back in the day have translated to hundreds trying to do the same thing present day. This all translates to increased pressure from fisherman. Human influence will undoubtedly change a fishery whether it be number of hooks in the water, industry on or nearby body of water, pollution, etc...

Well, it's extremely difficult to keep up with who catches the limit. We/I don't stop a guy from fishing when they reach their limit nor does a hunting guide. Two sports and guide can legally take 18 ducks but who knows how many each killed when a dozen teal land and the guns go off. Out of 29 trout yesterday afternoon, i probably caught 6-7, one guy caught 8-10, front boat guy the balance but that is a wag. So....... taking my limit out of the mix, they were one short of a two man limit. Me thinks it would be entirely unreasonable to expect adherence to tagging each clients fish on the water and shutting them down when their limit is achieved. Some client have trouble catching one fish much less a limit.
"What one or 5 people were doing back in the day have translated to hundreds trying to do the same thing present day."
Fishing birds is a prime example and why i have done the opposite this fall to great success with larger fish.

kemosabe... I was watched a couple of times when I was guiding as were some of my guides - the guys watching knew with fair accuracy who killed what.....
to counter this.. we had our guides raise their guns as if they were shooting even when they weren't pulling the trigger.

The law says when you reach your limit then you have to stop shooting or keeping. In reality it usually doesn’t work that way. When it comes to ducks Mr green jeans wants to know what ducks each man killed. Better have that sorted out before leaving the blind.

Last time that happened to me was on the point system and Sabine in 2004. It's pretty easy to figure out what ducks you kilt but not on trout/reds/founder. Guess i need to make dividers for my fish box with each clients name to be in compliance.

Maybe I don't understand the meaning of bigger trout coming from an area where limits were reduced.
See, I remember 10 lb trout being caught fairly routine year in and year out. Fished with a friend with one in the state's top 10
Y'all catching 10 lb trout on the regular now like back then?

Kemo be very careful what you wish for, just look how that went down in the federal system. It spread to captain / crew and under Today's regs if your on your permitted charter boat, that restriction applies to you 24 / 7 even if its just you and some buddies.
.
I very rarely fish with and never fish 'for' my clients and yes under most circumstances I shut it down at their limit. There is a rare exception when maybe we lost count or they are coming in so fast that it may happen. I don't want to clean all those fish.
.
Under no circumstances do I want the goberment telling me that just because I buy exponentially more licenses that I then loose a privilege. Yes there are days when I have said, hey guys mind if we stay a little longer and catch me a few? Then I start fishing.

yep but DC you are the exception rather than the rules in a lot of ways...all good.

Have you ever seen a 10# trout in person? Neither have i but we tend to believe fish stories when typically those 10#'ers were more like 7#-8# fish. Here are the records for spotted sea trout and only a couple were caught in Calcasieu Lake. I have been hunting a big fish for going on ten years and the best i can do is a little over 7#'s.
Species: TROUT, SPECKLED (SPOTTED SEA TROUT)
(Cynoscion nebulosus)
Rank Weight Angler Where Caught Date Caught
1. 12.38 Leon Mattes Lake Hermitage April 1950
*2. 11.99 Kenneth Kreeger Lake Pontchartrain Jan. 1999
(1999 LOWA Fish of the Year)
*3. 11.24 Jason Troullier Rigolets (Lk. Borgne) Sept. 1999
*4. 11.16 Timothy Mahoney, II Calcasieu Lake May 2002
*5. 10.81 Kevin Galley Calcasieu Lake May 1997
6. 10.75 Randolph D. Green Jan. Point Aug. 1970
*7. 10.70 Barry Terrell Calcasieu Lake May 2004
*8. 10.65 Jason Ellender Sabine Lake March 23, 2013
*9. 10.63 John Kaparis Breton Sound May 1979

The limits are a big reason I havent been fishing as much since I moved to texas. Cant justify driving a hour each way for 5 trout

Wouldn't be an issue for me. They are whacking big flounder right now in Texas. You could grab some flounder from your kayak in addition to your trout. You could also look into fly fishing from your kayak. Fly fishing redfish, drum, and sheephead is a ton of fun.

Most Texans I know are happy with the 5 fish limit. If meat were the reason why I fished, I'd save a lot of money just going to the fish market.

I do all that now. I think it's also the fact that its harder to avoid the weekend guys in texas. Just makes it less enjoyable when people are everywhere running wide open. May be more of this area than others. I just always do well around san luis

Now that I can understand. This also relates to my previous post. More and more boats on the water every weekend which equates to the well known areas getting a lot of fishing pressure.

I was fishing the small bayou from cold pass to mud cut in san luis area one saturday and same boat came through 6 times in 2 hours. I guess I need a boat again too because these clowns stop about 50 feet away from being on plane and throw a huge wake. Just roll on through at that point
