Debating on wheter or not to go semi auto or pump for "my" first shotgun.

I have done some DD but would like some first hand opinions.

I'm down to the Benelli Nova Pump(New) or the Remingtion 1100 semi (Used). I think I can get them both for roughly the same price.

What does the OB think about this?

Oh, yeah. This gun will be used for both, skeet shooting and duck hunting.

If I were given or won an auto, I'd sell it abd buy a pump, plus a bunch of other crap.

It's all about preference. I'd start with the pump if it is a first.

I have always used a pump, but will be switching to semi-auto before next hunting season.

New Benelli over used Remington pushes me towards Benelli. Is the Remington in really good shape?

If you shoot a lot of shells.. an auto is very sweet to have. Go shoot 100 rounds in a sporting clay place, and you'll be loving the low recoil and lack of pumping the auto gives you.

I personally prefer an auto, but play with both and get the one that feels better.

The remington is in pretty good shape. It has a few scratches on the barrel but just minor wear otherwise.

Have to admit, leaning towards the benelli

Both sound like excellent guns. And if you enjoy guns... you won't own just one.

Don't over think it. Just go buy the one you want.

Probably not helpful, but I shoot both and I can't say I really care for one over the other. After a while, pumping becomes second nature (TWSS) so you won't even notice.

Just get whichever one fits you best. I wouldn't give much weight to the new/used thing if the Remington is in good shape. They're both good guns and the Benelli will have those same scratches sooner than later.

ETA: By both I meant pump and semi-auto.

I actually enjoy using pumps. Just like the sound I guess. I do know, however, that in the future I am going to want a semi to hunt. (From what I have been told at least). That is my dilema. FWIW, I have a high perspective for both companies.

I strongly prefer a pump. I've seen the most expensive autos hiccup and screw up for various reasons. I like 870s more than anything else, but I've never heard anything bad about a nova.

I have both autos and pumps. I like both for different reasons. I tend to just go with whatever mood I'm in when selecting my shotgun for that particular outing.

I have the nova and I swear it's indestructible

Considering you would be getting the nova new go with the nova pumping isn't that hard and I've always shot pumps and loved them

What are the barrel length and chamber length of the two guns? Both 12s or 20s? Many of the old 1100s were 2 3/4" chambers, which is not ideal for a duck gun if you can avoid it.
