I’ve got a fairly large bed in my backyard that is staggered with little Jim magnolias and azaleas. It’s fairly sloped and most of it gets a good amount of afternoon sun. There is shade in the morning. The magnolias do well. The problem is my azaleas often wilt in the summer and I’ve had to replace several if I don’t put extra water on them. I’m looking to replace the azaleas with something that handles sun and drought a little better. I was thinking of something like a grass plant.

Does anyone have any experience with grass plants that can tolerate hot afternoon sun but also thrive in partial shade? Any recs? TIA

Rock garden, and just spray round-up one a month.

Fountain grass or dwarf pampus grass.

Yeah the fountain grass might work. Going to do some reasearch

ETA: fountain grass doesn’t look to survive harsh winters well from what I’ve read

Sunshine ligustrum. They handle sun and heat well. Very low maintenance.

I like the look of the dwarf pampas but looks like it is 3-6 ft tall. I’d like something 3 ft or less

Not a grass plant, but I recommend Golden Cypress Mops.

My gardenias are doing very well. Morning sun, afternoon complete shade. They'll smell up your whole yard.

Plant plastic. Concrete covered with some gravel. Wish my wife would let me.
