Buddy has 230 acres in Centerville, MS that they are getting ready to clear cut (starting today). It consists mostly of pines, gums and oaks. The pines were planted 30 years ago and thats what will be cut. All oaks will be left alone and some gums will be removed. The property has several ponds, food plots and creeks running through. It serves mainly as a deer hunting property. However as the pines have matured we’ve taken fewer mature bucks and it doesn’t hold Turkey as it did in the past
We would like a professional opinion as far as how to best setup the property for deer hunting in the future...location/size and shape of plots, how to create transition zones, where to leave thick cutover for cover, how/where to replant etc.
Do you guys have any recommendations on a company/person who can come out and help draw up a plan?

Not sure if MS wildlife and fisheries is the same as LA, but you will want to contact them. Seriously that’s what they are there for, they are experts in this stuff and come out to your property to set up a plan.

Yup, which is why I’m asking the great and powerful OB if anyone has experience/recommendations of someone they might have used.

I second call MS wildlife, companies like Mossy Oak do this to, but why pay if you don't have to

I wasn't aware that LA or MS WLF would come out and do a complete assessment and plan how to setup a property. If they do for sure use them since they probably don't cost much. If they don't they can probably point you in the direction of someone who specializes is this area, LA/MS, as it is greatly different than most other areas. Midwest, WTX etc.

I’ve seen that MS does forestry type consultations but I see nothing regarding setting up to manage for hunting

I would make the center of the property a sanctuary. Especially during hunting season. If you could leave that core in a thick cutover, great.
When laying out food plots, consider prevailing wind direction. I would have them on the edge of your sanctuary, but not on the property line.
In regards to turkeys, I assume the entire area has seen a population decrease.

LDWF has private lands biologists that will work with you for free
Would think MS will as well

Check with Mississippi State and see if their grad students would take it up as a student project. Regardless, they have a ton of information.

Contact Jeff Sturgis or Tony Lapratt. Look them up. They do great work!

This should have been done before the cutting started, so that the harvest could be done more strategically, with hunting in mind.

Mark Buxton-Southeastern Wildlife Management. Look him up on Facebook. Dude produces some massive bucks and great food plots. Don't know if he travels as far as you live.

NWTF, NRCS, Quail Forever all have biologists that will help you plan. They usually work with government entities snd look for programs to help offset cost.
