That’s a good trend but how are they getting this info? I’ve never had anyone ask me at da ramp if I released any >20”.

There is a release over program where you measure, photo, etc I believe and send the data in. They send you a sticker.
For LA to be on the list is impressive. Just look at the other thread with 3 man limits being caught, and presumably kept. Good to see some folks starting to take conservation seriously.

It's not a state or govt. deal. Read the "Why?" portion on this link.
Release over 20 website
Ultimately it's up to you as a Sportsman if you want a better fishery.

Unless she’s gonna put me on the star leaderboard… at that point she’s going in the box

They've been giving away extra prizes right now. I forget what they are. This is how other states like TX and Carolinas get to the 30" size trout. We've been historically in the bottom 3. Pretty quick turn around. I don't fault anyone for keeping them but Ive decided to release the big ones.

Releasing big fish is great, and I'm a big fan of it. With that said, what people really need to focus on is releasing the size fish that spawn the most and produce the highest amount of broodstock. If that makes sense. It's not just about size. It's a combination of size and numbers of fish in a particular range to maximize production.

Damn that's awesome. I really wanted to participate before the trout all moved out but I guess I'll just have to take a long boat ride now.
Dang.
Dang.

yeah, but LA also has both more people catching 20" trout and more 20" trout prob than any other state, except FL or TX.
I am surprised TX not first as hard as they push catch and release on the bigger fish.

I released a 20” and a 21.5” this past weekend. It makes me feel better than posting a box shot with those gals on top

I feel targeted. j/k. I need to do a better job of releasing the big ones as well. Every trout this weekend was slap full of eggs.

Even the little ones were females. If you feel targeted, that’s on you! I think you saw me release the 20”.

Never heard of the organization but it is a good idea...better than regulations, in my opinion, because peer pressure is harder to ignore than the law. We do not have a size limit on Crappie in Georgia. Alabama has a 9 inch limit and South Carolina has an 8 inch limit. Very few crappie caught in Georgia under 8 inches are kept, basically because they are not common when most people are capable of catching crappie easily, the pre-spawn and spawning periods. Most people can't catch a crappie on a dare post spawn...and those who do are pretty likely to impose a personal size limit on their own and do not need the state to do it...and when the state does many resent it and many pay it no attention anyway.
Another issue is condition of the fish, how it was caught and what it was caught on...if the law says all 20 inch fish must be released it means all gut hooked 20 inch fish, 20 inch fish that was hit by a dolphin, barracuda or shark on the way to the boat or a 20 inch fish caught on light tackle by someone who does not know how to fight a larger fish on light tackle and simply unhooks an exhausted fish and toss it back. A self imposed size limit should allow for these factors...a law can't. Fighting a large fish on light tackle until the fish is belly up is about as detrimental to fish as a trip to an ice chest. Releasing a 24 inch trout within 50 feet of a dolphin is equally about as deadly for the trout...keeping that trout in a livewell until it can be safely released would be a violation of a law but is a good idea as far as conservation goes....

The person at the top of the leadeboard for 2023 in LA has 40!! trout over 20"! That's impressive. 2nd place has 7, which is also pretty impressive.

Buddy, this isn't some mandatory thing. Just for shits and gigs. It's fun thing to do and you get to feel some achievement for a good sized trout.
Same idea as tagging a fish. You are participating in hopefully creating a stronger fishery.

Saw a recent report from a baw fishing the dam in Hopedale with a box full (maybe just the top of it at least) of +20" trout, some up to 24".
Each their own I guess, but those really aren't great eating at all.
The program seems to be gaining traction overall, but still some that just wanna show off some logs on the cleaning table.
