How this happens is beyond me unless he was HAF DAF etc...

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said a 23-year-old Talbott man died in a kayak fishing accident on Monday.

Authorities recovered James Bradley Campbell’s body in a cove near Panther Creek State Park around 7:36 p.m. Monday. A TWRA release said Campbell was not wearing a life jacket when his kayak overturned and he went overboard.

A man fishing with Campbell was unable to find him in the water.

The man flagged down a passing boater who called 911 for help.

The investigation is ongoing.

No way I'd get in anything like a yak without a PFD.
Used to do it while sailing at night, that was also SAF.

I'm just curious, but do you fish with a lifejacket on? Almost 100% of fishermen that I know do not wear lifejackets when they are not running their outboards. I would argue that fishing from a kayak is really only slightly more dangerous than fishing from a boat. And that's just because it's physically more difficult to get back into a kayak in open water than a larger boat.

Maybe this dude couldn't swim. Personally I really don't understand how you can fall out of a kayak and drown unless you wind up tangled up in some sort of fishing line/rope from the kayak. Even then, it's not that hard to get your head above water and hold onto the kayak long enough for your fishing buddy to see that you're in trouble. I wonder if something is missing from this story.

If you panic, you don't have much time. One lung full of water and it can be over.

This is sad news. I have a bad habit of not wearing mine while kayaking.

What do you mean "How can this happen?"

easily! Very, very, very few people are proficient at open water swimming. There are olympic swimmers that drown in open water. People drown all the time. It's very sad, but you don't have to be HAF, SAF, DAF or whatever for this type of thing to happen. shite happens sometimes. And quickly.

You cant swim if you are unconcious or stunned. A kayak usually has all kinds of crap to bump your head on. I think kayakers would be surprised how crazy turtling can be if they practiced. The first time I practiced turtling, my teathered seat hit me in the face.

Wear your life jacket. Practice flipping and getting back in the yak.

Exactly, people seem to forget about the possibility of bumping your head or some sort of medical emergency rendering you incapacitated. With that said I fish alone 90% of the time and always wear one, even when in 12" of water, you never know. I also happen to think a person's level of safety should be their decision, so I always hated the safety preachers. I had a couple friends almost back out of a tournament last night because there's now a PFD rule.

yeah but right next to a big floating object?

and as far as hitting stuff goes, how is it any more dangerous fishing from a kayak without a pfd versus fishing from a regular boat without a pfd? or do you literally wear a lifejacket 100% of the time you are in a boat?

In even just slow moving water, falling out, going underwater and being disoriented for just a few seconds can have that big floating object 30ft away from you by the time you get your bearings.

The only problem with this is that public resources are expended when a someone's lack of safety precautions require search and rescue.

I do. I spent the time and money to find one that very comfortable and I'm willing to wear that long. Don't buy a cheapo orange neck ring and you'd be surprised how you don't even notice it's on after a few minutes.

Something like 80% of deaths in triathlons happen in the swimming stage, which is the first stage of the event.

I do tris, masters swimming and am a good swimmer, but I wear my vest on the kayak unless I'm just floating around in a cover or something.

No current in that lake to speak of
he could have gotten knocked out he may not been able to swim so many variables we could spitball all day trying to guess.
I have pulled my share of idiots out of the water they all lived but had a couple of floaters that were already dead when I found them in the morning when I got to my station look out see a body floating great way to start the day. People would go for a night swim & drown. the med examiner found drugs & alcohol in their system.
impaired on or in the water is very irresponsible people lose their shite around water & don't respect it.
Working Rip tides was always a damn shite show you would go in after some dumbass tourist from Ohio who is caught in one can't get back in so you hit the water only to catch a exhausted swimmer panicking only to have to tow this person further away from shore into deeper water to get out of the rip that usually freaked them out.
Dealing with a panicking person in the ocean is not much diff from a person that's all jacked up on meth you cannot reason with them they heard nothing you said so giving them instructions was use less sometimes you could give them a quick smack and that would snap them out of Lala land or just sit & most of the time I would just float with them until they were exhausted & had calmed down & stopped fighting with you & their adrenalin rush was gone then tow them back in.
Good swimmers do drown, the freak out panic mode kills more people causing them to drown than their lack of skill in water people literally forget how to swim when they panic I watched it daily for years, people always underestimate the power of Mother Nature and the force moving water has. Be prepared

Coincidence: I just got my PFD mailed to me yesterday for my kayak. Safe to say I will be wearing it while fishing.

People without some serious training and experience tend to completely lose their composure when stuck underwater.

It's the same reason you never let a drowning person grab your arm or leg.
