I’m old, and my uncles are now gone, but they used to swim across the Mississippi from Luling to Destahan. They would walk up river to reduce the landing zone on the other side. My dad said they wouldn’t let him join because he was too young at the time. Should have been around 1930ish, so less traffic.

One of those uncles used to hop freights during the depression.

My BIL and I would ski the intercoastal near Houma. One time we went out as a hurricane evac was in progress. A steady parade of boats was coming in, as we jumped one side of their wakes. Good Times.

Don’t think he mentioned “shooting out of the water.”

Read his post again and dont think as it obviously is not your greatest gift, I will quote it below as you may have difficulties finding it one page back.

quote:

Yall don't have "deadmen" on the MS River? I've seen this a handful of times on the Warrior here in Alabama. This is where the barge either churns a log off the bottom or runs over a floater. It then shoots the log out of the water and into the air. If you're riding behind one, you're a "deadman".

Never ride behind a barge, ever.

Who are we to judge if its a terrible idea. Its a form of darwinism though.

Not gonna get into an argument, but you need to slow down and read. The post in question (my earlier post) reads:

"I can't imagine how/why you think this is an old wives tale. Debris being kicked up by wheel wash is very common in areas where the channel is relatively shallow. (The river between BR and NOLA is pretty deep except at the channel crossings. The river above BR is relatively shallow.)"

You obviously quoted somebody else's post about airborne logs. Don't feel bad - everybody makes a mistake. Some people even own up to them when they do.

eta: You clearly quoted Aubie Spr96. I accept your apology.

It was brutal, but seems like more of a "don't send it quite that hard" thing than don't ski behind barges.

It is probably a Type III coast guard approved life jacket which is not designed to turn people over in the water. Type II will turn some people over and Type I will turn most people over.
