I'm hoping to be under $5k.
Which is why I am saying go LS. At least it will be easy to upgrade and work on later down the road. There are millions of 5.3s out there. I honestly would only go with a crate long block if I was trying to keep it authentic and purely stock. If you ever plan on selling it, a ls will add to your value as well.

It says "Expert Level," which I'm definitely not. But I know a couple of guys that might help for some beer. Just seeing the wiring harness makes me want to drink.
Most of this stuff is not that difficult, just takes patience. I put a 6.4 hemi in my JK and the most car engine work I had ever done prior was change an alternator and spark plugs

Seriously, get an iron block LS motor from a junk yard. Those things are stupidly overbuilt and last forever.
Watch this video of a 4.8L LS cranking out to 8000RPM. Even with a low displacement LS you can get tons of power.

If you naturally aspirated one or run low boost it will last an extremely long time and be very easy to work on. The aftermarket support for an LS motor is also massive.
I have the L94 (LS3's "truck/SUV" brother) in my 2010 Yukon Denali and it is a tank. Just changed the rear main seal at 140k miles (they do leak oil after the gaskets wear) but it still has tons of life left. I'm excited to see if I can drive it to 200k.

I’d like to keep the matching numbers personally.

I'm with Gaston, don't loose the straight 6, it's rock solid. I would only want a CJ if it stock 6. If you are gonna spend money, fuel inject it.
LS swaps are cool, but only need to be done by a mechanic who will work on it again when it breaks, and it will. The file will be thick to keep up with and any new reputable shop you take it to will be very leary on touching a swap.... definitely not for cheap either.

SBC are pretty much the 305s, 350, 454, etc... like they had in the past
454 is a big block

I guess I should check to see if they match in the first place. I've only owned it for 15ish years. I don't think the matching numbers would do anything for the value now, personally. But maybe in another 30 years?
