There's not even a caliber limit.
.17 HMR is a tremendous deer rifle in the right hands.

Works even better with a Q-Beam.

This too. Thought about using a .22 this year at bow ranges. I know for sure it can be done and leaves no meat waste at all.

I've taken two deer this way. Sister and BiL live in subdivision-ish area. Firearms legal but neighbors frown upon it. Kept both shots under 30 yards and studied the brain location anatomy. One shot was at 25yards facing away hit her in the back of the head. Dropped. Second was 20 yards and hit her square in the plate of head as she was eating acorns. Dropped. Deer seems to make movements of "move, stop for 2 sec, move, stop, move." Shoot just after they make a move.
Oh, and I've heard old timers would shoot them right in the heart, then sit down and eat some jerky for 30 min, then go find the deer. Unpushed and the relative quietness of a .22 the deer rarely run far. They wonder why the yellow jacket that just stung them made such a noise. Then they lay down and die.
