Ours, when I say that dog could run forever, I mean I believe he could run forever.

I wish, 30lb GSP would be awesome

Had a 40 lb female gsp years ago, but that's about as small as they come.

I have a harlequin Great Dane and I tend to think she’s the greatest dog.

I own a Braque Francais (French pointer). They are aesthetically very similar to GSP's, but a little smaller (though not as small as 30lbs) and a good bit calmer. It is a relatively little known breed and there aren't many breeders in the US. I first learned about them on this forum.

Nope! can they hunt ducks in sub freezing temps? NO they cannot. Go back to hunting one thing with your pretty dog if you are a real man and hunt more than one species & includ hunting in cold weather, water, tough brush feathered furred game and occasional blood track you need an ugly dog.

Buddy of mine with a Drahthaar would beg to differ with you. That's the dangest dog I've ever seen work.

My wife's BFF from college has one, she lives in a very rural location so it works. But that dog is crazy AF. It's either at a 1 or a 10. No in between. It is also constantly hurting itself due to insanity. If I were an avid bird hunter, I would consider one. Maybe if I were retired and upland gamebird hunting was my sole obsession. Outside of that, no thanks.

Get outta here with that noise.
Northern Iowa and South Dakota get plenty cold in pheasant season.
Tough brush? You think GSP's have a problem with tough brush?
You either don't know much about GSP's or you have them confused with another breed.
GSP's are the best all around hunting dog on the planet.

That's my dream dog for tracking, but I can't justify the price given that it would only be used for tracking deer.

Brittanys or Boykins can do everything GSPs do and they eat less food and have a better coat.

Negative.
10 Brittanys would tap out before the GSP caught his second win.
German Shorthaired Pointer, there is no substitute.

If by the best, you mean crazy AF, then yes.
I've know too many neurotic GSP's in my lifetime to say yes to the original question. In fact I'd say GSP's are above average in the crazy/hyper/spastic department compared to other breeds, particularly if not exercised properly. Many suburban folks want to get a sporting breed, and not give the physical and mental stimulation that the breed required. Since GSP's are so high energy, that requirement is pretty high.
They're good dogs, but require a lot of work.
ETA: My brother has a GSP and had a weimaraner before their current dog. I thought the grey ghost was a handful, but compared to his GSP I was wrong. But she's been great with their boy's from about age 6 or 7 to 16....

Agree, but that's an issue with owners not doing their research.
GSP's are smart and have an engine like no other.
Part of what makes them such a great bird dog.
People who buy them and are surprised at their energy level didn't do their homework.

It seems like what you are doing in this thread is a public service announcement saying don't get a GSP.

My cousin has one. NEVER FRICKEN SToPS. Guess that’s good if you like that kind of thing. Aggravating to me.

Best bird dog, maybe. Best dog, nope.
