In the market for a new vehicle

Sort of a sad day, as my first vehicle was an old Wrangler. I went through the SUVs and pickup trucks for a while, but when we bought my wife an SUV 6 years ago and only had one child, I sold my grand Cherokee and bought a 2004 TJ. Shortly after we had number 2. Number 3 was born back in late May and I just can’t fit all of us in there anymore. I guess part of me was thinking a JKU would work but I test drove one from a guy in my neighborhood and it just didn’t seem like it would work. I’ll get another Jeep one day but for the next 5 years or so I need either an SUV with a 3rd row or a crew cab pickup.
So I have a few questions for the OB.
First, what are your experiences with higher mileage on the Chevy/GMC engines. There’s a nice, well taken care of Yukon Denali for sale near me. It’s a 2008 with 122k. It’s got the Vortec 6200 V8. I’m going to test drive it one day this week. Mainly looking for any known issues. It’s a one owner and looks great online. Just want to know what I’m getting into and if there might be any issues. I’m mechanically inclined (I do drive a Jeep after all) so minor things are not a big deal.
Second, if you needed something for 5-6 years that you would then let a teenager drive through the end of high school and into college a few years, would you necessarily need something newer or would a 2006-2010 be fine. Basically I’ll have this vehicle for 10 years minimum. So I don’t want something that’s going to be in the shop.
Third, what would you recommend that’s truck capable but also family friendly? I keep looking at F150 crew cabs and Silverado/Sierra. It might be a tighter fit with a car seat, booster, and 10 year old in the back but it would mean we don’t have to take the van everywhere for trips in town. We’d still take it on road trips.

The engine should be fine but check to see if it has the air assist suspension. I had the same Denali and had to put a new compressor and shocks on it after about 80000. One of the shocks had a leak in it and the compressor was having to run all the time and ended up burning it up. I ended up putting a aftermarket compressor on it but if the dealer does it it would probably run $1200.

Man honestly I just went through a year plus of hunting and testing used trucks to replace mine. The truck market it so damn ridiculous now that I would tell you to look real hard at buying a new one if you plan on keeping it 10 years and giving it to your child. I mean the peace of mind knowing I did the maintenance and took care of it alone is important to me if my kid is driving it across the country.
You are not going to save much on a preowned truck over 10 years. That coupled with the fact you get a 5 year warranty to take you halfway there is another huge point for going new. You are going to automatically take on a good bit of risk buying a used truck, of any brand, with 100k+ on it.
I hunted for over a year to find my Tundra and it was a unicorn that I had to fly across the country to get. I had the luxury of time to hunt for it, but if I didn’t I would have easily bought new. Yeah I’m not in a huge hurry. I’m thinking 6 months or so of making this work. Id rather think long term than jump into something just to have more space. I have school carpool to think about but I’ll be taking one of mine and one neighbor. Not a long drive and they can both climb up front once I’m in line at the drop off.

When we had our third I traded my F150 in for a Honda Odyssey and now drive a commuter car. One of the best financial and practical decisions I’ve made and I don’t ever regret it. I do not have the need to tow anything, though.
With kids, the auto sliding doors are one of the best inventions ever made. Just open them and let them pile in and close them up without worrying about banging into other vehicles. And there’s so much room inside.

ill tell you this, i did the JKU thing for a year, and now am back in a truck. Foolishly i had a silverado and a TJ and sold them both for what i thought i really wanted. i loved my jku, but the practicality of not having a truck finally wore through on me. having a booster and carseat in the back of my JKU for my 2 daughters took up a lot of space. now I'm back in a crew cab truck and don't regret it. ill eventually get back into another TJ as well, but it will be my 3rd vehicle.

Also check out older used Lexus LX470s. They are usually well maintained, and the 4.7 engine is bullet-proof. They are the same vehicle, but are typically cheaper than their Land Cruiser counterparts.

That’s kind of where I am. I’ve had a TJ for a while. I thought I would just drive it until my daughter turned 16 but that’s 6 years away. It was fine with just two kids. Carseats were never a hassle. Actually easier to put an infant in because I’d just flip the back window up and put him over the seat into the carseat.
They would all fit in a JKU now but the kids are only going to get bigger. My wife thinks I should get something to drive and then give to our daughter but I’d rather drive something I like since it is more than a couple of year away.
I’ll look into the Lexus and Sequoia suggestions. Some friends of ours, both the husband and wife drive a Sequoia. He drove her old one when he got her a new one.
They would all fit in a JKU now but the kids are only going to get bigger. My wife thinks I should get something to drive and then give to our daughter but I’d rather drive something I like since it is more than a couple of year away.

most vehicles today will go 200k with no issues and 300k+ if well cared for
so buying new is just if you like the status symbol of a new vehicle and you feel like wasting money for the peace of mind knowing a vehicles full history.
for half the price of a new vehicle you can buy one right around 100k miles and it will last you another 10 years
sounds like an suv would fit your needs the best and i personally would recommend looking at toyotas for the best quality and longest mileage life span. a sequoia if you need a v8 or a 4runner or rav4

Your daughter is 10. IMO its rather absurd to worry about or even consider this. 6 years is a long time. It could be multiple vehicles away. I agree with trying to think long term to a degree, but you need to make the best decision for you for a couple of years.
Honestly, the best car for a 16 year old is a full size car. SUV's are safer but repairs are more and being a lot bigger makes it more likely for them to bump into things. You can buy a 16 year old a Honda accord for 6,000 and last through college fairly easily. I wouldn't recommend worrying about your personal vehicle for 6 years over $6,000-8,000.

Exactly. She wants me to get an SUV that she can drive in 6 years. I’d rather sell my Jeep and buy something with cash and keep having no payments. The van will be paid off in a few months. I’ll get my daughter a Highlander or something like that when it’s time.

Reasonable minds can disagree, but I know for a fact that your “half price” claim is way, way off. Maybe with 200k miles, but not even close at 100k.

We just picked up a pristine '08 GX 470 with 115k for $16.5k. All maintenance was done when it needed to be. Fully expect it to go 200k+ miles

I have a 2016 Sierra Crew Cab. I have two car seats in the back and there is plenty of room in the middle.
Sometimes the kids force my wife to ride back there if we are on a road trip and she doesn't complain, and believe me, she doesn't hesitate to complain with or without reason.

So I just bought my daughter a Highlander that I’m going to drive for 5.5 years. Too good of a deal to pass up. I was going to Carmax to look at a Yukon. It was still there around 3 when my wife was browsing suv inventory. By 5:30 it was gone but a 2013 Highlander had popped up. I test drove it with all 3 kids, my wife, and the salesman in there. The kids approved. The wife loves it. And I’m good with it. I’ll get better mileage than my Jeep and it has plenty of room. Has the 3.5 v6 in it. Drove like a new car. One owner trade in. We’ll have it for the next 10-12 years barring any major accidents.
