maybe they kill plenty in far less extreme conditions? Sounds like you need the good blinds to move the birds for your blind?

Just got back to the truck thawing out.... with 4 man limit.... one of only 2 boats at the launch this morning. So maybe you just need to learn how to hunt instead of depending on other hunters to spook birds your way. We were finished by 8am.... with no dogris or teal. All big ducks.

I've got nothing against hunters that choose to stay at the house in cold weather. But I do remember a hunt I made with my dad many years ago in SWLA. The whole lease was iced over, ponds, canals, everywhere. We had a full moon and the boat ride to the blind was worth getting out of bed for. The jon boat was throwing ice out the side instead of spray. The ice glowed in the moonlight and would slide across the top of the canal. It was surreal looking.
We got to the pond to find 3/8 to 1/2 inch of ice covering the entire surface. This pond was probably 1/4 mile across, so that was something to see for a south La boy. We didn't kill a lot of ducks, I'm sure most of the ducks were rafted up in the nearby salt water lake and gulf, but we killed a few. If the duck was flying low and fast, he would hit the ice and slide for a mile. If it was high overhead, it would punch through the ice when it hit. When we retrieved the ducks out of the boat, you would go the hole in the ice and the duck would be under the ice, two or three feet from the hole.
Lots of pain that day, cotton long johns and a WWII surplus fatigue jacket was about as good as we had back then. I think we were a lot more "conditioned" to putting up with the cold and the heat. Can honestly say I'm glad we went to the blind that day. The memories alone were worth it.

Son called me this AM from launch. Boat stuck to trailer, hydraulics and throttle froze. “Dad, is this normal?”. Heading back home to regroup and get ready for tomorrow AM. Good lesson for ol’ junior.

back in the 80's when i was young and mad at the ducks, i remember hacking at the ice with a willow whacker just to get the boat pointed the right way...wouldnt have missed those hunts for anything

Went out this morning. Water level was right and wind was ripping.
Saw maybe 40 ducks total today, worse day of the year. Thought I would mop up when I got to the boat this morning. Had only 2 come within a hundred yards.
Big ducks are non existent in my area. Few blue bills on the big water and couple little groups of greenwings are all that remain. Hope a push comes soon or a reverse migration.
