Oh and most the time by the time a grander is leadered they are on the cusp of death, theyll fight to the death before giving in.

I caught an ~850ish marlin a few years back in Bermuda. it came to the boat floating upside down. we drug it for about 20 minutes trying to get water flowing over its gills, never got it kicking. We call them lawn darts when they come up like that and have no chance.

I read that there is a less than 5% chance they go on to survive for longer than a week after a long fight.

Yeah, that would change things. I would imagine that fight just puts too much stress on a fish that big.

Also I have eaten Marlin, someones said they taste like crap. Whoever that is likely hasn't eaten Marlin, I have it's freakin' awesome some of the better fish I have eaten.

If I felt it would survive I would let it go, however I would try not and get in that position. Anytime I'm fishing blue water and I think we have a big BF or something like a large bill fish on the line I give the pole away as soon as I can. I have no desire to go through another 5+ hour fight been there done that don't want to do it again!

Well if you want to hold the IGFA world record and get your name in the book, you have to kill it. Any grander is fair game. No possible way she's getting released without a weight on her.

THIS

She would be going home with me and I would have enough Marlin meat to feed myself and friends for a while.

excuse my ignorance, i don't offshore fish too much, but why would you even consider releasing a fish like this? this is not a flame, i'm just curious, what's the point?

its considered taboo to take a marlin nowdays, with most tournaments going towards all release formats. The only exception for most people is if the fish is a grander.

Wow. That's a tremendous fish. I'm still searching for mine. Only one I seen that big was fishing Cajun Canyons Tourney couple years back. We had 3 little 200-300 lb dogs running in the spread chomping teasers. Then all the sudden this massive 800-900 lb bitch comes up all lit up on the flat line and destroys it and dives, she knocked it hard enough to pop the rubber band off but she must not have liked something about it cause she never came back for the second hit.

God I love this shite. For all who've never been. I compare it to duck hunters vs deer hunters. I'll fish inshore at any opportunity, but if a blue water trip is an option I'm picking that. Catching any billfish feels like shooting a nice buck to me. You catch trout, you hunt marlin

Going fishing out of los suenos in costa rica in late may. hoping to get on to a marlin or sailfish...either one would pretty much make my year.

You are guaranteed to get on some bills out of Los suenos. You'll never want to see a sailfish again you'll catch so many

Fished La Guaira back in the early 90's for 3 days . . We caught 15-20 sails . 1 Blue and 2 whites and the biggest bull Dolphins I've ever seen . The only thing we kept were the Bulls .
