I'll never understand the widespread irrational fear of snakes.

I would guess that it has a lot to do with your upbringing and where you were raised.

Being raised on a farm, rice farm, surrounded by bayou and swamp....WE KILLED SNAKES! Every time we pulled a water curtain to adjust water levels in the rice field..there was a cotton mouth. Every time we reached in to pull a drop pipe..there was a cotton mouth. Every time we pulled a boat under a tree..a cotton mouth fell in the boat with us

They were everywhere...not only that but we lost a lot of eggs to chicken snakes, we lost a couple of cattle to snake bites on their hooves that could never heal, we lost dogs to snakes.

So for me and my upbringing...WE KILLED SNAKES!!!

I've moved away now and my "snake temper" has cooled down but I think that is where some snake hate comes from. Some of you may remember a snake ID thread I had a year ago where I posted a picture of a snake I found in my back yard where my kids play. I didnt kill it and sure enough it was a cotton mouth (they look different here in FL than the ones I was use to in LA). I regret not killing that snake every time my kids go play out back now

Anyway, just trying to help those of you that dont understand "snake hate" I am sure that some people hate snakes for lesser reasons, but for some of us there is a reason behind it.

I know brah...like I said, I regret it every day my kids go out back

I had been reading a lot of OB at that time and everyone was going nuts about killing snakes and posting pictures of "harmless" snakes....and for some stupid reason, I 2nd guessed instinct to shoot it in the face!

I let some BS libs talk me out of a solid poisonous snake kill in the very area where my kids play....that is how the media desensitizes you I guess

Cotton mouths are pretty easy to identify. They look like pure evil.

The speed of a black racer will scare the shat out of me every single time! Not to mention it is black (just like an assault rifle) so that shat is double scary!! They aren't poisonous but the still shock/scare me to a level that I don't want to be shocked/scared. So I smoke everyone I run across in the yard so I don't have to worry about it.

I used to catch snakes every day when I was a kid. Mostly water snakes. I did see a racer once and it was fast! Back to the water snakes though I would see maybe one moccasin for every 20 harmless water snakes. Many people see a snake in or near water and it is identified as a moccasin. If you ever see a moccasin you know it is not like the others

Well it was funny because this snake had the look (despite the look being a little different than what I grew up with in LA) but what really threw me off is that this snake was calm and very non-aggressive. Normally they slither around like someone shite in the cereal all the time! Maybe he just got done eating and wasnt in the mood for a fight but he was really laid back...so I thought that I had just misidentified him as a bad guy and picked him up and move him on his way.

Good thing you didn't catch him

When I was 5 or 6 I almost made that mistake when my friends older brother yelled "no it's a moccasin". I didn't know about venomous snakes til that moment.

Ive never touched a snake with my hands that has still had the head attached to it....but handeling that snake with my little 5 foot rake was plenty close enough!!! Hell you can see my phone/hand shadow...my hand was only about 3 ft from him when I took that pic. He was a calm killer luring me in that day

Yeh, I know...Id guess that I have killed over 1k of them in my farming days...those suckers were ALWAYS ready for a fight! But this old boy was chill....I am guessing that he had just ate or something?? He seemed so content and slow...and no it wasnt cold....it was low 90's that day if I remember correctly.

I was at a camp in the marsh and had to walk across a 3ft gap bw the dock and bulkhead. The last time I crossed I noticed a huge moccasin lying in the gap. Maybe a foot below me. Scared the piss out of me b/c I had probably walked over him 10x in an hour.

Awesome pics.

Last week we backed out of our family lease in Texas. Caught some big snakes there when it was cold.

Wish I had a good camera on me when I hiked the AT. Saw many a rattler and copperhead with a few non-lethal guys mixed in.

Very cool. Love the Indigo. I've always wished we had them here. We have a few along the coast, but none up where I live. They're very impressive snakes.

lol as well as your quail population! Usually when i find those texas rat snakes I find them hiding up in the top of my chicken coops around 5-6 foot long. Used to not kill them but tired of their foolery lol,.....
