For ducks, you will need nothing less than .444 Marlin ot .45-70 Govt. Might wanna throw a thermal scope on it for any ducks on the roost.

Just nostalgia here..
First rifle was a Marlin 30-30. Perfect cartridge for hunting deer in the woods.
I sold that 30-30 to my car mechanic (ended up being a crook) to help finance my upgrade to a browning 30.06.
10+ years later, I opened a Christmas present from my parents..they had bought my rifle back from the mechanic. Pretty cool. But now I have no,idea where the gun is..guessing at my folks.

They aren’t the safest weapons in the world...and it’s a BITCH to load one on a sub freezing morning.

The Brockman conversion of the Marlin 1895 in 45-70 is serious business.

LINK

You supply a used pre-Remington era 1895 and they give you back a gun capable of killing anything in North America.

Don’t put a scope on a lever action rifle. That’s stupid. Henry’s are too heavy and have too much drop in the stock. The only Winchesters made today are a handful of Miruko 94s. Marlin just went tits up so you’re only get what is in stock and then it is done until Ruger fires up production again. That pretty much leaves used Marlins and Winchester 30-30s.

Of course, if your budget is $1,500 or so, I would seriously consider a Pedersoli 86/71 in 45-70. I would get the Hunter Lite model. The Winchester 86 is about the strongest traditional lever ever made and it is a John Browning design. Put a receiver sight on it and go kill stuff.

Debatable. Lever actions are fun as hell to shoot with peep sights, but scopes are a big help with identifying your target in better detail.

That’s what binos are for.

To each his own. For me, binoculars are for looking for deer I don't know are there or getting a good look at deer that are too far for my ability to shoot. When I see something I know is a deer I don't have time to be swapping between binoculars and a rifle. Experience has taught me he ain't hanging around for all that shite.

I've killed a pile of deer with a lever gun and all of them were with a 2-7 scope.

I'll argue that its stupid to not put a scope on one if its a hunting rifle. If its a beater or a plinker or a guy just wants to keep it cheap than open sights are great. I've never been in a situation where I wished my rifle DIDNT have a scope on it.

Then experience should teach you that there is absolutely zero reason to use a lever if you are going to scope it. They have too much drop and a scope destroys the balance. If you are going to use a scope, get a bolt action. They are designed with scopes in mind.

It’s not about distance and bullet drop. It helps to see deer in the tall shuck grass and giant palmettos.

I’m not arguing that a scoped rifle is not superior to one that isn’t, I’m arguing if you are going to use a scope, use a different platform. Traditional levers are 19th century designs and you destroy a lot of the utility of them by scoping them.

I have a bolt action 270 I use most of the time. I do enjoy my Marlin sometimes. Like Downshift already said, there’s never been a time I wished I didn’t have a scope on it.

I have my PawPaw's Marlin 336 chambered in 35 Rem. and really like it. Not sure if they still make them like they did in the late 40's or early 50's when he got it, but I would recommend the same gun.

I have a soft spot for Marlin just bc I have my dad’s .22. It’s bolt action but it’s at least 50 years old and has never once failed. Has never once been cleaned either.

I would buy that Marlin that’s rated to kill a T-Rex.

We'll have to just disagree. A marlin 336 with a low power scope is a great climbing stand rifle. I took the scope off mine and put a peep sight on it and used it that way for a season then put the scope back on. Its a far better rifle with a 2-7 scope.

My experience tells me that I like having the ability to have my 1.5 in the thickets and my 5 power for the occasional 125-150 yard shot. My experience also has taught me that my scope set on 4-5 power can see deer and determine if they are a shooter at one minute past legal shooting time when my naked eye can only see a blob.
I like the handiness of the lever gun the fast follow up shots and short barrel. I spend 90% of my time in areas where 150yds is a far shot and hunt with my dirty 30 90% of the time.
I hate when a person makes absolute statements.
