I've grown up hunting and fishing in south Louisiana and even worked for gator hunter for a while in high school. I've been around them a lot and have never been scared of them. I'm not one to exaggerate or mistake the size of a gator. I was kayak fishing around Lake Bigeaux and came around a clump of trees and was 20 yards from the biggest gator I've ever seen. I was paddling closer to try to get a good picture and his body rose out of the water and I swear he was about as long or longer than the 11.5 ft kayak I was in. He started swimming towards me and I stopped paddling and he went under about 5 yards from me.
I know they do swamp tours around there and I was expecting him start getting cozy with me. Especially if he was expecting a chicken leg or something. I got the cold sweats thinking I was about to go swimming with him. Has anybody else seen him in there? I'd say he was 11 or 12 ft long.

I’ve seen some big mommas in there. A couple of years ago I was in between Bigeaux and Pebla in that cut north of the bridge. I was in my kayak fishing for bream. There were 2 big gators in there about 20 yards from me. Probably 10 footers. The fish kept biting, so I kept fishing.

I had my head on a swivel. If they were to start swimming my way, I would’ve paddled like hell.

I was near that same cut. I was worried that paddling would get him worked up lol

I saw this guy in lake martin a couple weeks ago. He wasn't worried about me at all. There were 4 his size in the same area.

Yep. They were all over laying around. I would be focused on something else and get too close and they would go ballistic getting in the water. It would scare the shite out of me.

I've seen some monsters in there well over 10'...
there is a little cove that, during the summer, they will come out on a bare bank and have counted over 25 before they all started to the water as i approached in the boat...
reminded me of an old Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movie...

When I younger there was a huge gator at Lake Martin,
14-15ft range. He had one eye and stayed right along the fence at the beginning of the bird sanctuary, some a-hole went in there one night and shot him right there along the fence. Was in the newspaper. There is a lot of big gators in there, the area around orange TX intercostal has a ton of big ones as well.

I will add this:
I commute to Laffy every day. One of the many times I’ve been stuck in traffic on the basin bridge (2 years ago) I exited my vehicle and looked over the side of the Henderson swamp (westbound I10 right past Butte Larose). The biggest alligator I’ve ever seen (from Abbeville to Venice) in my life was cruising topside right under the interstate. fricker looked like a garbage barge. I have no doubt your encounter is legit.

speaking of bream fishing....you do alright in there? I used to tear them up when they were bedding in lake verret on a fly rod with a bream killer fly. I would catch 200 or so in a day sometimes.

Last year when the bream fishing normally gets hot (April/May) the water was high. Kind of like this year. I caught some of the biggest bream I’ve ever seen. Problem was, the numbers weren’t there. I’d catch one, then the rest in that area were tiny. Move on, catch another hammer. Then tiny fish. And so on. But in the past I’ve had some pretty good days out there catching a good mess. In the Boulevard, Dixie Canal, Four corners, Toy Toy area especially.

Biggest I’ve ever seen was deep in Bayou Savage NWR and that sucker was every bit of 14 ft back in 98.
