This thing looks really cool. Short of something that cleans them for you like this, what is the purpose of special washing equipment?

I use my boiling pot and basket. I just fill up the pot a few times, slosh the crawfish around, lift the basket out and dump the water each time.

Am I retarded? What am I missing?

I wouldn’t eat anything that’s been in an old chlorine bucket.

Water companies put chlorine in the city water, so if you use faucet water to cook you getting more chlorine from that than the residule in this bucket. Also there's a new thing called AJAX, it makes water really sudsy and washes stuff.

He probably wouldn’t eat out of the old oil buckets I pick up on the beach either.

You're not retarded. You're probably just young. As you get older, washing crawfish that way gets more and more difficult and hard on the muscles and back. The old saying, "work smarter, not harder" really starts to mean something as you age; especially if you boil as much as I do.

I bought a couple of those crawfish washers for $80 a piece. Now that I've had them for 2 seasons, I'd be willing to pay 3x's that much. I drink beer and relax while crawfish gets all cleaned up. Only gotta lift it once. Keep in mind, I boil twice a week, every week without fail and sometimes 3x's depending on who's coming. Anywhere between 4 and 8 sacks a week works the muscles hard.

I just put them in a large rectangular plastic storage bin and slosh them around with the hose on the bottom until the water runs clear. I don’t even remember buying the bin. Total cost, probably about $12.

I love it. A few thoughts that might make it better.

Mount your water inlet at a sharp angle to the bucket to create a vortex. You could also use a PVC 90 inside the bucket to achieve this easier. That should improve cleaning and trash flow to the top. Also, replace the drilled holes with a large mesh screen or even a stainless, round Weber grill grate if it'll fit in the bucket lid frame. That'll let trash out and improve the water flow. If the bucket is big enough for a sack of crawfish to move freely with the flow of the water, it should clean like a sonofagun. Awesome idea

When I get another bucket I'm going to make it a little different and add a 90 or a 45 on the inside. The grass and trash comes out the holes on top just fine. I think I may drill the holes just a little bigger on the next one though.

as big as you can make them and not have crawfish get out would be the best
