There isn't anything cheap about duck hunting. I guess once you get past the initial investment it isn't that bad. Buddies and I still get a laugh about us donating plasma to buy decoys and shells when we were in college.

I have friends that go to Iowa every year, they cook a couple Cajun meals for a farmer and he lets them hunt and stay for free
There's cheap hunting out there you just have to have the time and want to find it

What pisses me off the most is the federal programs on private land. I don't want to pay for some rich mother fricker to have DU come in and do all kind of habitat management on their land.
DU doesn't do nearly as much of this as ya'll think....
DU and CRP are vastly different...
CRP and mitigation banks.....

Its private investors in the midwest and north that pay farmers more to leave their crops standing than they would make harvesting them.
if a farmer can make 7 bucks an acre more NOT harvesting.... what you gonna do?

Why will ducks land in a dry corn field in Iowa but not in Louisiana? Or at least I've never seen ducks in a dry field down here.
Have always wondered this
given the choice they will chose a wet field
but I have seen and killed them in BONE dry fields here.

I spent a lot of time in SW Iowa...I can attest this is no longer the situation there. It was in the 90s. Now everything is leased up. Farmers discovered how much people will come and pay and they just shut down the walk up hunter.
If you asked in 94 you were told "yeah you can hunt it, but you gotta promise to kill everyone you see" Now, not so much. I will say the public land is underutilized...we had some jam up turkey hunts on public land.
If you are talking geese and ducks, I apologize. I am talking deer and turkey.

I don't blame the farmer. But with the current ethanol mandate making corn prices soar, why pay them anything to leave grain in fields. That whole farm bill needs to be retooled.

yeah, I was like 95% thru with my post and said screw it

Hell, the Iowans may pay you to shoot geese for all I know. But you used to deer hunt anywhere, now not so much.

Isn't LSU playing Iowa in a bowl game? Maybe if the Tigers fold up like a lawn chair, Iowa will once again be receptive to LA hands going up there again and killing their animals.

But DU and WRP are not. The fact is a lot of federal money is used for work on private land. They sell it as improving habitat. That's bullshite.

I don't think sushi was talking about govt subsidies, are you for eliminating all farming subsidies?

Actually they sell it as a guarantee that in 30 years a young kid can do more than read about hardwoods. No other group is planting acorn trees other than private landowners and the government.
