re: I found that bullet. It did not explode.

No I haven't weighed it yet. My dad has the scale. Next time I'm out there I'll find out what it weighs. It's definitely shed some weight.
I'm just amazed it held together.
And last night I was a tad too drunk not to gloat about it.

Yep KE= 1/2(M)(V)^2
Increase in velocity is king. A 150gr moving at 2700 fps <<<< 125 gr @ 3200 fps. I am a firm believer in ballistic tips and have had great success with 130gr winchester ballistic silver tips. Haven't lost a deer with them yet and have put a few shots in less than perfect places.

I know you're calling that a gut shot, but I've seen deer killed with a bow hit there. Terrible miss by the archer, but he cut some huge artery running along that area. I'm guessing you caused a massive amount of bleeding with the shock from that load hitting that area.
Posted on 11/30/12 at 9:12 am to AlxTgr
Massive bleeding doesn't really give it it's due.
Every artery going to an organ was suddenly wide open and flowing into the cavity because the heart and lungs were completely untouched and functional. I trailed a wounded deer that someone else shot with a heavier bullet that was shot in this same spot that wasn't found till the next day a mile or more away. I actually gutted that one and ate it. It was a nasty, nasty, nasty job lemme tell ya but the meat was fine so I felt kinda obligated since the guy gave up on it and had flown home the night before.
The difference in the guts for that deer, and I think that was a 180 grain PSP 30-06, and this one was night and day. That one was an almost identical shot to this and the guts were all mostly intact. It was like you'd shoved a broom handle through him. But he didn't bleed much where you could trail him. Neither did this one but this one was dead meat immediately.

I'm going with placement more than bullet.

That black hole is a tear from skinning it. The entry is actually about six inches to the left and up from that in the middle of that red part. Ain't nothing there but guts.
Posted on 11/30/12 at 9:31 am to faxis
I must not be seeing it. I was looking at a shot right under the spine.
Posted on 11/30/12 at 9:44 am to AlxTgr
Nah it's lower on the deer than that.
Maybe this one will help. If you look closely you can see through the hole.

Faxis, I used to use BTs and NEVER had a problem. My 270win is pushing 130 AB at around 3050. When that rifle speaks shite sits down and listens.
300wsm is pushing the 165 AB at about 3150-3200. He gets the job done as well.
If I ever get off my arse and get the STW shooting, I hope to push a 140 AB up to 3400. That shite will be a lighting bolt.
Edited to correct info

I'm convinced.
Pretty obvious that the trouble and misconception comes from people shooting what amounts to a varmit load, myself included. That's a perfect mushroom if I've ever seen one.

I bought a box of Federal 140 gr AB's for my 270. Never got a chance to shoot them yet. I fugure it's the best of every world (on paper at least). Accuracy + violent expansion + weight retention. I think I'd rather lean towards more penetration than what the BT provides. How well do those BT's penetrate shoulder bones?

Well as to how it does on bones, here's an example of it doing 3000 coming out of a .308.
Hits a rib going in, evaporates half the heart and turns the lungs to snot, hits a rib going out, makes a nice exit hole on the other side.
I don't have pictures of the one's I've shot that hit the leg bones but they've never stopped it exiting. Violently.

Or hit a rib and skid down the side of the deer?
I am a punch thru guy I like a bullet that when it exits the other side it takes all the life out with it. I've made 2 bad shots like that this year and neither deer went more than 40 yds.

Just popped a semi at the thought of it.
That's going to be awe inspiring.

Offshore this is the only time I have ever stopped this bullet in the deer. If you like big arse exit holes, you'd love this bullet.

BT+white tail shoulder bone=that white tail is DRT. Never had one not exit on a shoulder.

Only 125's I see in '06 are reduced recoil rounds and that's just the antithesis of what you're wanting.
federal has a 30-06 125 gr in a soft tip at 3140 fps; and a 150 gr Nosler Ballistic tip at 2910 fps.
I used their 140 grain NBT in a 7mm-08 on my first few deer ,dropped in their tracks. Hogs ditto.
Switched to Nosler Trophy Bonded in a .280 and they seem to run at least 60 yds?
I haven't killed anywhere near a hundred but its an interesting comparison.
If I follow your logic,a soft tip would do just as well if the speeds are close?
Posted on 11/30/12 at 10:01 pm to ecb
Probably pretty close, yes. As long as the jacket mushrooms properly. Before we used the BT's we used PSP's of the same weight and the ones I remember were similar damage to this.
My first deer was with a 125gr PSP clocking this speed and I hit it in almost this same spot but it was a crossing shot instead of angled like this one. That deer flopped over dead in his tracks but the bullet was right under the skin on the other side. We did weigh that one and it retained 85% of its weight. Same deal, gut soup.
Which leads me to believe this BT actually penetrates a little deeper because had this one crossed directly like that one, it would have blown out the other side.

Oh I've seen what BT will do. I've also seen what they won't do. Some guys shoot them for years until they hit that shoulder just right or glances off a rib and lodges in the back ham.
You can kill a 1000 deer with them and not have a problem but that 1001 may be the one that gets away.
I know every shot that that Accubond is gonna do what it's supposed to do every time.
