I'm headed to work about 7:50 this morning and stop at a local gas station.

As I exit the building a dirty white guy in a tattered construction vest yells "HEY!!!" aggressively from across the parking lot in my direction. I look at him, then look behind me to see another guy in a safety vest so I assume he was talking to a co-worker. I open my truck, get in, and crank it. I put it in reverse and when I go to check my mirrors, he's standing with his nose an inch from my window (rolled up) yelling, "Are you too fricking good to talk to me?!?!"

Without rolling the window down I said, "Do I know you? I assumed you were talking to that other guy in the safety vest."

He's all wild eyed and just starts ranting, "That's what I fricking thought! You piece of shite!" while flinching/feigning like he was going to punch my window.

I ignored him from that point and continued with my vehicle maneuver.

As I pulled out he tried to kick the back of my truck but missed. I just kept going. He was still shouting and throwing his hands in the air following me across the parking lot.

As to his seriousness, this guy was ultra aggressive. I could see the rage in his eyes. I suspect he was strung out and still up from the night before.

I would never want to kill someone, but the situation escalated so quickly out of nowhere I was legit concerned for my safety and property. He was on me before I knew what was happening.

My question is, what would have been the appropriate response? Had I pulled the pistol to back him away from my window, that's brandishing a firearm, right? Don't pull it unless you are going to use it is what I was taught.

What if he was successful in kicking out my tail light? Do I exit the vehicle with the pistol to inspect damage and back him off? Fire at will?

This has been bothering me all day as nothing like this has ever happened to me before.

Jesus frick son. You ONLY pull out your pistol in defense of your life or someone else's life. There are no other instances where pulling the firearm can be justified. Your situation wasn't "life threatening" at that point.

no sense escalating that situation if he didnt have a weapon

but if he had skittles on him, that's a different story

U did the right thing. Don’t pull it unless you shoot it. A broke taillight is not worth being detained and going to court over. There is no way you should ever get out and confront him or argue with him, just swallow your pride and walk away.

Okay, that's what I did. I thought my OP explained that.

I guess my question was what if he punched out my window? Or pulled my door handle to open my door?

shite was going down fast I and I was making split second decisions...

My scenario would be if the guy opened my door, dragged me out and started pounding my head on the concrete. At that point I'm shooting him. Anything other is life ruining and not worth it.

Your vehicle is an extension of your house, same rules apply to both, He didn’t do either of those examples you cited. So you did the right thing by driving away.

You did the right thing, drive away, if he made contact with you on your truck call police
From a distance, probably should of called police regardless to prevent the next situation

Response: "Are you too fricking good for me not to?"

Then drive away. There's nothing about your encounter that justified drawing a weapon.

Negative, castle doctrine does not apply to a vehicle

That's what's bothering me. My door was only locked about 2 seconds before I realized he was standing at my window. What if he got to me before I got in my truck?

I didn't start this thread to brag about my cool hand. This guy was pissed, and I had never seen him before. I had no idea what his motives were.

ETA: In all honesty, I was in shock for an hour or more afterwards. Only when I retold the story at work did it dawn on me what happened.

If someone opens my door pissed off and tries to pull me out of my truck, I’m shooting.

If someone tried to pull you out of your house in a violent manner, pretty sure most would do the same.

It does in Florida, which is where I reside. I should have included that in my post. I thought Louisiana was the same.

Well since he didn’t you get to learn from it.
Would you have been able to draw your weapon?
Was it chambered? Would you have been able to unholster/unsafety it?

I would have pulled it to let him know to back off. I’ve been in a few situations like that where pulling the pistol deescalated the situation. You don’t have to use it once you pull it.

Crazy folks at gas stations are probably the primary reason I have a truck gun.
