Has anyone ventured north of the border to hunt?

How was it dealing with the regulations?

I don't think you're allowed to bring meat back. Could be dead wrong but other than that I haven't heard any horror stories

You have to send in a form declaring your firearm a week or so ahead of time. Firearm in a locked case bullets separate.

Horns cleaned/boiled of all meat wrapped and tagged. Keep your license until you get in the US. They will check at the airport.

Went on a goose & duck hunt last August. Brought my shotgun, did not have to file any paperwork prior to leaving. Had to travel in locked case and declare it coming and going. It was like $50 to bring it into Canada.
If it's a guided trip, they will usually line up your license for you. Also ask if they rent guns to avoid the trouble. I'm going back this year and will not be bringing a gun.
There are also TSA approved ice chest bags. We brought back nearly 100 birds between 5 of us. You have to check them through customs but was not hard.

I've been to Saskatchewan hunting whitetail. It was very simple - the entire plane from Minneapolis to Saskatoon was hunters. The airport and Canadian security were very familiar and welcoming to hunters. I had no issues with checking the firearms, just had the Canadian customs agent verify the serial number and that was it. Longest part was waiting in line with all 100 other hunters.

No big deal with the rifles or the ammo at all.

I highly recommend it, we had a great time.

Canada is a breeze especially when compared to our neighbors to the South. I've hunted Saskatchewan and Alberta several times. Just follow the Canadian regs and submit the paperwork for the firearm well before you arrive.

The biggest hassle is typically dealing with the Dept of Agriculture on the way back to the States. The skull cap/antlers must be removed and no brain matter than be left attached to the skull cap. You cannot bring the whole head back to the States intact. The outfitters will usually handle all of the skull cap and hide preparation for you. Most people do not bring the meat back to the States.

Do they honor LA hunter safety cards in order to purchase the hunting licenses?

Or do you have to have a hunter/gun safety course from the area you hunt in?

Hunting property prices are crazy cheap in Ontario.

You can buy 150 acres for 30gs

But it is 1700 miles from here!

I went back in 07

Took my gun no problem

Bought shells up there

Bought beer

Brought birds back.

Killed mallards. Specks. Canada goose. Snows. Sandhills And Hungarian partridge.

Research the regulations about travel and it's no big deal.

Thanks for the info.

Maybe we can establish an LSU north of the border group if we can establish a camp.

Will keep you posted.

I used an outfitter and we bought licenses on the way to the camp at a local sporting goods store.

We go every year on self guided hunt for ducks/geese. U can register your gun ahead of tima and saves time in customs but dont have to. Buy lic and shells there. Guns in locked hard case for airlines. Absolutely can bring meat back, but has to have head or wing attached. Can bring 3 day possesion back. 8 ducks and 8 dark geese a day 3 if which may be specks.
