I have heard this, but it seems a bit of a stretch...unless a very thin or cheap kayak. I've only used ratchet straps on 3 kayaks over 10 years and never had a problem. I definitely don't see any "flattening" or anything like that when ratcheting down on my Cuda. I go straight across, just in front of the seat and it's tough right there.

I always run two cam lock straps. Typically one across the center of the boat at the rear of the bed and one across the end of the boats at my bed extender.

From a short research session,

Why would you want to use ratchet straps anyway? They are too easy to over-tighten and will easily damage the structure of the kayak. I’ve seen multiple accounts where ratchet straps have bent the hull of a kayak so bad that the paddler had to adapt their paddling technique to correct the direction of the boat.

Have seen several boats destroyed using ratchet straps, bad idea.

Easy to say. I am sure those who flattened boats didn't think there were doing so. I know my buyer didn't know.
Point is, there's no reason to use them.

Hook one strap on the front hooks, one on the back hooks, and one under the tailgate wire to the trailer chain hooks. Each one should go through something on the kayak whether it be a scupper plug or a strap for the seat. If you do all three the tailgate will fly off before a kayak will.

The only place where my strap touches the kayak is on each side, directly in front of the seat. It's not touching much plastic at all and I don't see any way it could cause an issue. I'm not tightening it down with a cheater pipe to where I can play music with the strap. To each his own though. I prefer the ratchet straps.
