Baldface hornets sometimes build their nest underground, too. Wait til you run over the top of an underground hornet nest with a bushhog... Some of the mountain wisdom passed down through the generations up here is that you can get an idea of the severity of the upcoming winter by how close the hornet nests are to the ground. High in the tree = mild winter. Low in the tree or close to the ground = severe winter. Conversely, I have seen yellow jackets build their nest above ground, too. Not too often, but I have seen them do that.

Dawn detergent and water in a sprayer will work. But with Wasp spray you can stay 20ft away. Get you a few cans and get them
