I have a half acre pond and have noticed quite a few larger snapping turtles and several soft shells. I recently saw an extremly large snapper surface while I was fishing the bank.

I've tried hanging lines from a few trees. I've tried lines on the bottom. No luck.

What does the Outdoor board say? Best method, equipment and bait to catch a few of these tasty suckers?

Thanks guys

I make lines with steel leaders then bait with chicken livers and throw it about 2-3ft off the bank. Use nylon string to tie off leader to something sturdy.

Ps. The chicken livers is only if your pond doesn't have catfish.

What size hook?

Also, livers won't work. I've tried. Catfish.

drain the pond and use a 22.

You can use one of my pumps, but I get to come and we split the meat.

Tried cut perch. Whole perch.

On a leader line with nylon. Several sizes hooks. Exposed hooks. Hooks hidden in the bait. I continue to just be robbed of my bait and left with an empty hook.

I use just regular 3/0 or 4/0 trot line hooks. Yea I usually do it in shallow bayous with no catfish present.

Got this guy out of my pond last year doing just what JD said. Except I used fresh cut up catfish.

If your pond has alot of catfish, you're probably better off trapping them

Man I'd consider it. I know that I am looking at at least 20 turtles.

I particularly want the dinosaur that was three feet from me yesterday. His head was a little smaller than a soccer ball.

Turtle net. Get one. If you set it properly, it will catch every turtle in the pond.

If you're set on catching them on lines, maybe try to put the bait right at the edge of the pond in about 6 inches of water. That might keep the catfish away.

Good idea. I'm thinking shallow water and to use cut cats.

That keeps failing I will look into a net.

I'm not out.

I'll bee there with bells on, a brick of 22's, a case of beer and a tank of diesel.

I'll stop what I'm doing to shoot turtles in a heartbeat.

hoop net with milk jug tied hanging from top with holes punched in it and full of any kind of meat or fish scraps.

If I lived close I would do it for the turtles.

When I was a kid there was a farm pond near my house that had a trap. I was a 55 gallon drum in the water with a hinged 2x6 attached to the top that angled down to the water outside the drum. The turtles would crawl up on the board to get some sun. The weight of the turtle would cause the board to tip down and drop them in the drum. You may have to add some weight on the bottom side 2x6 over the drum to make it tetter totter the turtle into the drum.

Four lines are now baited wit cut catfish. All along the bank. I had something run with one before I even left.

Any tips on keeping shite turtles away?

Next looks like a trap followed by a few sticks of dynamite.
