You know how to clean one when you catch a bigger one? That is important. I'm available for hire. The fee is as follows: you bring beer and turtle to my house and I'll clean him. You haul off guts. My daughter gets to keep the skull.

That sounds like a deal.
I've never cleaned a snapper only a few soft shells. Can't imagine much difference?

The turtles would crawl up on the board to get some sun. The weight of the turtle would cause the board to tip down and drop them in the drum. You may have to add some weight on the bottom side 2x6 over the drum to make it tetter totter the turtle into the drum.

I doubt a basking trap is going to work for any snappers.

If you are west of the atchafalaya river you need to talk to geauxtiga about cleaning her for you. I think he charges $10/lb.

Never thought about it but you're obviously right. Why is this?

I was kind enough to fight the hook out the angry shits mouth. Lil dummy immediately hit another line.
Glad to see that my system worked for ya. I don't throw em back, though. I kill em. That's one less snappin turtle to eat on my fish. But that 1/0 worm hook will rust off pretty fast when you have a throwback if you just cut the wire leader there at the hook. Better stretch his neck out all the way, though, before you get close with those wire pliers...

Yea I doubt I try to pull anymore hooks. It was a pain in the arse.
I'm thinking I'll clean most that are caught going forward. Get enough meat and cook em up.

Everytime I caught one, I'd call up a friend who liked em. I didn't actually kill em, but I got rid of em just the same. He would put em in a 55 gallon drum and feed em dog food for about a month, then he'd dress em out and save the meat til he had enough for a turtle cook. Try some breakfast bacon the next time. Best bait I've ever used. Ya gotta thread it on there pretty good, though. Place the baited hook as far upstream from your discharge or overflow as you can. The smell will drift downstream and the snappers will follow it all the way up the pond to the bait.

Sounds like a great way to catch a dog.
I did catch a yote one night, Tenfoe. That thing made so much of a racket that I didn't know what was going on at first. Yote broke the hook off the wire leader. I actually felt bad about that, so I only bait the snappers during the day now. No dogs around here to worry about.

Did not know that. I figgered they laid up at night because I always saw em stretched out on the top of the water or on a log or the bank catchin some rays...

Before I found out my buddy liked to eat em, I'd sneak down to the pond and shoot em with a 12 gauge. I've done the low crawl many a time to get within range before they ducked under the water or slid off a log or the bank when they saw me.

Use shrimp. They will go crazy over shrimp.

I agree. We don't have enough shrimp up here, though, to use for turtle bait. Shrimp costs too much to feed it to snappers! Mama BFIV would not be happy if she knew I was using her frozen shrimp to catch turtles...
