Reason why i ask is the wonderful toyota dealership tried to anal rape the lady. She went in to get her oil changed and she ended up with a list of "preventative maintenance" shite that totaled up to 1k. Also, i change my own oil.... her dad has always brought it to a dealership and thats the way she likes to do it, never wanted to listen to me. Well now she does
The timing belt supposedly needed to be changed and while were in there lets just change the water pump. Oh and your fuel injectors need to be cleaned.. oh and your throttle body needs to be cleaned. Oh and the list goes on. This a-hole tried to get her to not let me change the frickin air filter cause i might dislodge hoses and important things... Its a 4runner and a monkey could change it after looking at it, probably the most simple air filter change i've ever done. The water pump and timing belt were changed at a toyota dealership about 4-5yrs ago..... shouldn't this a-hole be able to see it?

Man, I'm not sure on a Toyota, but you DO NOT WANT TO RISK IT if its getting close.

I had the misfortune of ignoring a warning light. Once. And at about 80 miles an hour, I had a timing belt break.

It totalled the vehicle.

Probably didnt even look, they just go through a list of items that yoou "need" to replace, based off the mileage, year, or the fact you are coming for an oil change

I figured thats what went on.... he saw her coming a mile away and didn't even think about looking....
Don't these pieces of shite work on commission too?
I'm calling after work to ask why did he try to take advantage of her, when he could've easily looked it up and see it was done about 50k ago. Its a 2000, but its well maintained and runs very well. Oil changes like clock work, her dad keeps it spotless or should i say has kept it spotless under the hood. I'm going to look at the spark plugs this afternoon b/c that was something else he was about to charge her for.

A lot of times you can't even see the timing chain because it is housed inside the engine.

I would absolutely have it changed if you have over 70k miles on it. If you don't you could be looking at a 2k dollar repair job when the things goes.

Might have 50k on this one.... might.
Her dad actually laughed.... he does all of his own stuff on his vehicle, but had her do the stuff at the dealerships cause she was in hammond getting her masters. They live on the coast. Also, i know its hard to see it.... i'm talking about seeing her service records at a toyota dealership.

They were trying to get you...

My wife had a recall on her vehicle. They called her while working on it and said this and that needs to be done or it will fall apart when you pull out of the lot. (That's how they made it sound to her)

She agreed without calling me. She ended up with a 400 dollar brake fluid flush and change on a suv with 19,000 miles on it.

Next time they say something needs to be cleaned tell her to ask how dirty it looked.

Yeh thats what her dad and I both said.... she said he showed her on a throttle body they had at the counter... I said, I assume he didn't show you the one on your vehicle right?
She then got pissed cause it kind of clicked for her... Wanted to know why they would do something like that to someone? Why would they take advantage of someone? Welcome to the real world...

Im not shocked!
At no time did I say I was.... she on the other hand was. This is why I do most of my own work or if I have to bring it to dealer I laugh at them when they try this shite on me.
I'm asking how often should the timing belt be changed.

My bad. You sounded like it. This goes on everyday in every shop in America.

If your vehicle is a 1999 model year or newer and is equipped with a timing belt, you should replace it every 90,000 miles or six years, whichever comes first.

For all other Toyota vehicles equipped with a timing belt, we recommend that the timing belt be inspected with the other drive belts at 60,000 miles or four years, whichever comes first, and every 15,000 miles thereafter and replaced as necessary. Because the costs involved with inspecting the timing belt may be similar to those of having it replaced, many customers may find it more cost effective to replace the timing belt at 60,000-mile intervals.

Sure hope your not the a-hole she talked to in gulfport.... cause if you do that to women on a daily basis with a straight face then you have some issues.
and if not which I assume you aren't are you a service manager? If so then how do you guys get away with that shite w/o having any reprocussions? Or are you a mechanic? I don't mind letting dealerships do their stuff, b/c I feel somethings just need to be done by someone who deals with it on a daily basis. but, this was a tad ridiculous.

I've got a Honda with the 250 HP 6 cyl and I change the belt/pump/plugs every 105k. It's over $1k usually.

A recently closed place in moss bluff had the same spill on repair items. They told a guy he needs his cabin air filter changed and showed him how dirty it was...he said damn! That thing is dirty! So dirty the rim was black, It was orange when he changed it a week earlier. Hehe it wasn't even his air filter.

Honda recommends timing belt, water pump every 90k. My ridgeline has had it done twice. Last time was $940. I have 209k on it.
