This freezing rain mess made cleaning our ducks misery. It got me thinking about saving them to tomorrow since it will stay so cold all night. But we just sucked it up and cleaned them.

How long have the OB waited before cleaning?

Good luck and stay safe! Looks like great hunting this weekend.

I just finished cleaning about 40 and 12 geese we killed yesterday. We had a 8 HR drive home and it was 17 degrees with a windchill of 3 when we finished hunting and loaded up. Below freezing about two days is as long as I'm comfortable waiting.

In temps like this you can wait. I have thrown them in the fridge til the next day if I didn't have time

Some people up north will hang em up by their necks in a cool area for many days to age them

About 2 days if I am being lazy as frick but I always throw them in the fridge instead of keeping them in an ice chest so they aren't frozen stiff when I do clean them.

My paw paw said they used to hang them suckers for sometimes a week to let the meat age but I would hate for all of that blood to just pool inside those carcasses. Seems gross to me.

Just cleaned my 6 from Wednesday. Had them in the fridge and they are fine. I've gone 3 days before and they were fine as well. Not sure on how long you can go though.

Hang em outside by the neck. When they break and fall to the ground they've been properly aged. Or so I hear

I age mine in a bowl of salt water that gets dumped for fresh salt water about 3-4 days before either going in the freezer or in some marinade.

cut the butt and yank the guts out (drawing the bird) then you can wait a LONG time as long as they stay cool.

Age in the fridge, guts in if obviously not gut shot, up to 2 weeks. Sounds crazy but is legit.

I'd say that's more of brining than aging.

This. You can go for more than a week so long as the birds' guts aren't torn up. Or just gut them beforehand.

The coonasses by the camp put theirs in a grocery sack and hang them until they go home. Something about cleaning with bayou water is worse than leaving them hanging a few days. We throw ours in yeti or hang depending on weather. But after I breast them I soak and rinse another week or so

As a kid at our camp in the marsh I recall hanging them for a few days before we cleaned them. Now, I would gut them before hanging. Realizing the core temp inside the duck stays warm for la while coupled with possibly penetrated gut speaks of bacterial growth. To each their own, but I'd gut before hanging now.

Are they gutted at least?
