Don't forget a manual trans, and manual hubs, maybe even a solid axle front on leaf springs. A forever truck.

That's the problem.
The college educated marketing BA degree idiots don't want you buying a "forever truck".

They think selling you a POS that you need to trade in every 3-4 years for another POS is the way to go.

"Forever truck payment" is their business model, and it is biting them square in the arse.

I agree. I had a 2003 for 17 years and it was great to me mechanically but shite if I ever sniffed 17 miles to the gallon for an inline 6.

I had an ever so slight manifold leak that dripped right on my starter. I swear I changed that thing 6 or 7 times. And only paid for a starter one, maybe twice

I agree, xterra is much more truck than a 4runner.

How bout a Nissan hardbody 4x4 completely stripped down no power windows or locks only ac/heat. Choice of 4 colors vinyl seats and flooring. Probably could sell it for cheaper than a SXS

Nobody would buy that

It doesn’t work like you think. All of the machining and tooling is setup for the majority of what you get in a truck or any car these days. Not to mention the government forces a lot of things like backup cameras, land indicators, etc. not to mention they have to meet safety standards, emissions, all
Of the epa mileage crap. They aren’t gonna retool everything to sell 20k trucks to the very few people in the US that wants a small no frills truck that really isn’t gonna be no frills because of government regulation.

I recently watched a video explaining why compact trucks don’t exist anymore. Ironically, the EPA is to blame. Today, a true compact truck would be required to get mileage and emissions numbers that would be nearly impossible. And if they did get those target numbers, it would be so pathetic that no one would want them.

The fuel efficiency and emissions standards for larger vehicles is more easily attainable. The larger the vehicle, the easier it is to hit the numbers for that bracket.

Truck makers don’t want to pay the fines for their trucks not meeting the standards, and people seem to be buying bigger trucks anyway, so here we are.
