Could you imagine if there weren't any restrictions on how many deer you can kill? There wouldn't be any deer left in the state if they didn't have any restrictions.

no tagging in MS, and we literally probably have more deer per capita than any state.

Mr Game Warden... damnest thing I ever seen. I shot the deer and it ran off. I trailed it all the way back to the camp and I be got damn it died right here at the skinning shed.

AL has an app too, really pretty good when you have cell service. I use it rather than log on paper and call it in.

Sorry but we all know the law. Im not saying I haven't moved deer without tagging. Hell we have all done it. Its a habit and tagging is fairly new and hard to remember to do when you only have to do it a few times a year.

Next time leave him laying and go get your tags if you forgot them

Look at how many deer you see on social media being held on 4wheelers and such with no tag

There's a story about an old warden on Cameron Prairie that this reminds me of.

Guy shoots a deer, realizes he doesn't have his tags on him. Goes to his truck to get the tags, and the warden meets him there. Ends up giving him a ticket for not tagging the deer immediately. Also cited him for cutting limbs on a tree, which was against the rules on the NWR. He had climbed a tallow tree.

Some wardens are just assholes.

Damn that ticket sucks. I never tag a deer until we get back to the camp.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I was told it’s against the law to even deer hunt without a pen to fill your tag out.

I would definitely agree about some wardens being dicks. We've got one in the county I live in that would write himself a ticket if he thought he did something wrong. But I've met some that are as cool as the other side of the pillow. One night a buddy and I went trotlining and came back to the ramp where a warden was waiting. Buddy left his wallet at the house. Warden wrote him a ticket, but told him if he would fax him a copy of his license or text him a picture when he got home that he would tear the ticket up. Buddy complied and ticket went away.

You've got to be shitting me. Do they specify color, felt tip, ball point, quil and ink or will a fine sharpie do? These controlling fricks should be focused on solving salvinia, feral hogs and Asian carp.

Alright, let's use some sense here, people. They aren't going to write you a ticket if you don't have a pen on you.

But you can't fill out a tag if you don't have a pen. So if you kill a deer, and don't have a pen on you to fill in date and parish of harvest, even if you afix the tag to the deer, it's not filled out. That agent could just as easily assume you were going to remove that tag and reuse it. Again, it boils down to being able to determine intent.

But no, it is not against the law to not have a pen on you. Find anyone that has been checked by a warden, and 999 out of 1000 will tell you they were not asked about whether they have a pen on their person or not.

There is no way that ticket would stand up in court anyway. You could just as easily argue you were hunting hogs, and unless you are on a WMA and had the card already filled out showing you were hunting deer, they have no argument.

there is an easy fix for that. I bring a ziplock and a golf ball. I put the tag in the ziplock with the golf ball and shove it up the deer's arse hole. seriously.

I am a louisiana resident who hunts in MS. I know people who shoot 10 or 15 deer a year in MS. I guess they know the population can support some people abusing the honor system.

they gotta run LDWF one way or another. I'd rather they run it off of fines than upping license fees.

If the warden is good with that, sure. But it just further hammers the point home that there is no regulation saying you have to have a pen on you. The regulation is that you have to have the tag filled out with date and parish of harvest.

A civil restitution fine may also be in the mail $900-$1,200, total money racket!
