For me, in this scenario, if he was skinning it without it being tagged, not walking from truck with completed tag in hand.

The tag system is a crock of shite. Revenue generator, you said it.

I don't know if I'd call it a crock of shite, but the fines are pretty damn steep. Could you imagine if there weren't any restrictions on how many deer you can kill? There wouldn't be any deer left in the state if they didn't have any restrictions. But the fines are ridiculous especially for a first time offense.

Put your license and tags in your back pack or whatever you take in the woods. This is on you not the game warden.

While I understand what you're saying, I was pretty surprised that he was there, as was everybody that was around the skinning shed looking at the deer. First time I've ever seen green jeans on our lease in almost ten years of hunting there. The guys that have been hunting there their whole lives said that they haven't seen one come up there in probably 15 years.

Unfortunately with him showing up once and writing a ticket I'd say you will be seeing him a little more often.

It's not that long that we (La.) even has a tagging system. It used to be 6 per yr on the honor system. Hard to believe.

How long has the tagging system been in effect? Is it mainly to prevent hunters from killing more than their limit, or does it serve to help the state understand how many and what sex deer have been harvested.

I wish MS had a tagging system. There is no way that our biologists can even be in the ballpark of knowing how many deer are harvested in the state every year without one.

I didn't try and say that it wasn't on me. The OP was about the ridiculous fine that was given.

That's the other ball of wax. Of the ones who DO tag, many of those don't call it in.

I dislike the tag system but if it stops some people from shooting over limit it's worth it.

I'm fairly certain they have it for this reason because you're supposed to call the deer in within 72 hours of killing it.

When I was younger (late 1980s) I had a relative that lives in LA get caught for killing too many deer. He killed 17... I'm guessing someone must've gotten pissed and turned him in.

It doesn't though. And as far as I know LDWF still bases harvest off the mail out survey. That was stated in the La Sportsman article from last yr threatening to reduce the limit on deer.

EDIT article was from 2015. La Sportsman Deer Population, harvest sampling, etc.

Love the AR system. I can check it by app the second I see it's down and don't have to fill out tag.

Lol, Louisiana will never go to that system. The state loves all the revenue.

But that does sound like a great way to do it.

Most everyone else is quick to jump on it and say this is BS, but at what point would they say it isn't BS? When the game warden actually catches someone in the act of skinning a deer without a tag on it?

A skinning shed is generally where a deer is skinned. If there is a deer without a tag on it in the skinning shed, I'd assume it's about to get cut up.

Here's my thing: if I catch your arse in the woods without a tag, and everything is squeaky clean, I'm probably going to follow you all the way to where ever that tag is, make you fill it out and put it on, AND call it in. All assuming, of course, that the tags are obviously not on your person. No ticket, but a warning to have the tags on you in the future. If I find anything else wrong, you're probably getting a ticket.

If I find tags on you, and that deer is not laying on the ground where it died, you're getting a ticket. If I find you skinning a deer with no tag...you're getting a ticket. If you tell me you lost your tags and didn't buy duplicates...I'm writing you a ticket.

I don't know what kind of directives they are given, but I think agents could be alittle less dickish sometimes. But some are just born dicks.

I had a buddy get harassed by one because he had his shotgun in his truck during a closed season on a WMA. The thing is, it was a day before turkey season, and we were tent camping on the WMA...an hour and a half from home. No one is leaving a gun in their tent. The agent was just an arse.

I hang with a group, me included, that utilize flip phones. I.e, no apps.

Speaking of this, anyone know what a La. hunter is supposed to do when he kills a deer in Mississippi, but on the west side of the river?
