Thinking about doing some hog hunting at Sherburne. Do y’all have any pointers? Would I be able to take them down with some buck shot and slugs?

You know that old saying "you can't kill them if you're sitting on the couch"?

Well, if said couch is anywhere in Sherburne WMA, and it's an open hunting season, you will most likely kill a pig while sitting on the couch...if they didn't destroy the couch first. Hogs are everywhere in that place, and they don't give a damn about roads either. I've driven up on hogs feeding on the side of the road, and only after I stepped out of the truck did they run off.

I just killed a hog in turkey season with a 3" longbeard XR No. 6s and a turkey choke. Took 3 shots, but the first one was right in the face at <30 yards, so it only knocked her down. Probably only needed the 2nd shot, but figured I had one more in the gun, and I wanted to make sure she was down.

I've seen hogs on an overwhelming majority of my hunts in the last year, which was my first year huntinf Sherburne. Got within bow range (20-30 yards) on the ground a half dozen times in October.

Thanks. I’ve heard they’re everywhere there and that there is no season anymore it’s basically kill as many as you want whenever. Is that correct? Also, I’ve got a 12 gauge pump I can load up with buckshots or slugs. That should be enough right?

To my knowledge, there has never been an actual hog season because the state considers them an outlaw quadruped. However, you can only hunt them on public lands during an open hunting season, and only with the weapons allowed for that hunting season. So you can only use buckshot or slugs during firearms season for deer.

Kill as many as you want but you can only hog hunt on WMA’s when there’s another open season in progress (deer, small game, turkey, etc) and only with legal weapons for that season. So no buckshot or slugs outside of open gun season for deer

Alright I understand. So this time of year you can’t hunt hogs on WMAs you can only hunt them on private land. Thanks y’all. Is there anything you can hunt during the summer on WMAs?

You can only hunt on a WMA with the caliber/Gaige and type of weapon thst is open at the time. For example, if there is no hunting season open on the WMA, you can’t hunt. If squirrel is open you can use a shotgun, no slug or buckshot or rimfire from a rifle. The only time buckshot or slug would be legal is during rifle season for deer, which is only a couple of weeks a year

Correct. Hogs are legal to shoot year round on private land.

Think you just missed the sprint squirrel season that some WMAs have earlier in May. I think next open season on WMAs would be teal in mid September, followed by small game and deer archery opening in October.

I wouldnt want to hunt Sherburne in the summer anyways. Get eaten alive by mosquitoes in November and December on warm days. Couldnt imagine how bad those swamp mosquitoes would be in summer

best advice for YOU, a rookie to hunting, is to first get your hands on all of the rules and regulations for private and public lands and study them,

nothing kills the desire to learn the sport of hunting quicker than meeting mr green jeans and getting a ticket, going to court and paying a fine, ignorance of the law is no excuse...

Yep. And read through the LDWF regulations pamphlet ahead of time to familiarize yourself with the rules and regs...especially the WMA rules

Yes I have been reading through it a little. I just want advice and I need to do a lot of research before I even think about taking a trip out.

Thermocell keeps them in check. It's those damn gnats that are the real pain right now.

I'll be doing some scouting throughout the summer. If you want to meet up some time and learn some spots, I'm always up for taking someone out. When it comes to hogs, I'm not afraid to share some spots in Sherburne. They are everywhere!!

IIRC there was a nutria season on Sherburne that opened in Sept. I heard a lot of hogs were shot with 22s during this season.

The small game area between gravel road and river is full of hogs. EVERY TIME I'm squirrel/rabbit hunting with buddies at sherburne, we see them.

i was 20 yards off the road at 4 am to drop a deuce and had a bunch of hogs run up on me. scared the jeebus out of me. I had to holler to spook them off. they would have run right over me
