HIiked Perseverence Trail today

or part of it. Snow conditions above 800' back in the basin made it difficult. Made it about halfway to the end of the trail before the snow got too deep and slippery for my unprepared arse. Climbed up into the basin of Gold Creek above some cool waterfalls. Had to slide back down about 200 yards of the trail on my arse because the snow was too slick to walk on. Like sledding without a sled..
Caught a small avalanche on Snowslide Gulch
Old avalanche debris down on the creek
Fellow hikers
Mining ruins visible in the valley below

It's an awesome trail system. There are 4 trails you can access from it, which is just behind downtown and they can take you to some amazing areas. Mt. Juneau and Mt Roberts included. Folks coming here on cruise ships should take a few hours and do at least one of these trails.
Unfortunately the snow conditions kinda limit how far I can go right now.

Pic #8: I see why you really went out there.

There were some lookers out there today. Women are underrated here in this town, they like hiking and x-country skiing.

Man that's breath-taking.
See much big game?

Nah, saw some ptarmigan but there are often mountain goats and bear back in the basin.
When I was leaving, I saw three JPD officers on the access road. One said a hiker had a bear encounter on one of the side trails.
Some really steep sections with 600-800 ft drop offs on parts of the trail so if you do run into a bear, there isn't much you can do.

damn, that is sweet...I am curious, are these trails old railroad grades or where they constructed specifically as trails?...

This one is half and half. Part of it was the first road in Alaska. The first part is kind of steep if you take the switchbacks which I usually do.
The trails that lead off are for serious hikers and will not be accessible til early summer.
This is where the trail breaks off for Mt. Juneau just above the falls and gains another 3,000 ft in elevation. It's far from ready to ascend.
Juneau has more miles of hiking trails than we do roads. It's an incredible area to hike. From coastal to alpine.

I honestly am kind of suprised that there is as much ground showing as there is...I figured that you guys were still snowed in...I suppose you have said before that Jeuneau is fairly temperate in comparison to a lot of alaska...
very cool, man...thanks for posting...

Yeah, Snow is almost gone at sea level. Usually is by this time of year.

Juneau is rated by many as one of the top outdoor cities for outdoor folks. It's an outdoorsman's Disneyland IMO.

Nestled at the base of Mount Juneau and across the channel from Douglas Island, there are few more picturesque settings than Alaska's state capital. In fact, the landscape is so rugged that you can only arrive at Juneau by sea or air.
The surrounding region has an embarrassment of natural monuments. Glacier Bay National Park, Tongass National Forest, and Admiralty Island National Monument are right in the city's backyard.
Best places to raise an outdoor kid - Backpacker mag.

An unrivaled cornucopia: Glacier Bay National Park (ice, bears), Tongass National Forest (trees, bears), and Admiralty Island (fish, bears) total nearly 40 million acres
I can't think of a better hiking/kayaking place in the world. The hunting, fishing is unrivaled as well, plus there are winter sports. One of the few places in the world with an ice field within the city limits.
