A while back it threw a code for an oil pressure sensor going bad. I haven’t experienced any overheating, and there is nothing strange about the the engine compartment (I.e. no oil being thrown anywhere, temps are running normal, etc.)

I had a guy change the oil pressure sensor (and the thermostat for a separate problem, heater issue), and I drive it home today and it does the same thing: oil pressure gauge drops to zero, temp stays fine at highway speeds for several miles through both highway and city until I get home, and the oil pressure alarm goes nuts.

Any idea what I am looking at here gents? I’m not very mechanically inclined, so I’m not sure where to look next.

Wanted to see if there was some consensus here before I allow this guy to do anything else on my truck with a current 50% success rate of his fixes.

In the video below there a guy has the same issue on the same truck. There is a filter on the back of the engine. It looks like it may be below your sensor, not sure. It's called an oil pressure sensor filter apparently in other searches I just did. Autozone has them for $6. Did your guy replace the filter?

video of your problem

My '02 Z71 has never had this issue while my FIL's '03 Silverado did. I changed out his oil pressure sensor for him. His was maxxing out with each crank.

I always search online for mechanical issues since I've got four vehicles to maintain from that 02 Z71 to my 17 F150 to my wifes Jeep Wrangler to my daughters Ford Fusion.

He did, in fact, change that filter/screen. He made sure I knew to buy it with the filter included.

Fair enough, thanks!

Everything I am seeing online points to oil pump being next, with some mentions of doing an engine flush beforehand.

What is your oil pressure when it doesn’t drop to zero?

I had a 2010 5.3 and it consumed oil like a SOB. The oil pump went out on me one time and situation you described sounded very familiar.

Can’t remember the gauge off the top of my head, but it starts at the middle like it always did. I believe the number associated with the middle is 40 if I remember correctly.

My 2010 GMC Sierra did the same thing. I actually had just changed oil. I checked oil a few times and it mysteriously stopped.

Mine did what yours did and I got the sensor and filter changed and it was fine. Did the guy use an oem sensor? Might be worth changing just the filter to see what happens. My mechanic noted that almost always it is that filter but he check and mine was actually the sensor.

Crazy question, but have you checked the engine oil level?

If it only does it at idle/low rpms but immediately stops when you hit the gas, then it’s likely the o-ring has worn out that seals the pickup tube to the oil pump. Very common on 00’s GM engines. Easy to fix IF you can drop the oil pan, but that’s a big if especially on a 4wd.

I’ll double check it but I am pretty certain the level is normal.

Will update.

Also I remember my mechanic put manual gauges on mine to check the pressure. I’d definitely have the next one do that when you get it fixed. Just to know it’s not your pump.

check the actual oil pressure with a gauge and dont trust what the dash says it is, those gauges can be way off.

also did you replace it with oem GM parts? it matters a lot. aftermarket shite for these trucks is very hit or miss and most of it is junk

How many miles on your engine? I just had a 6.0l rebuilt for the same issue. It had some wiped out cam bearings, engine had 240k miles.
