I was fishing swimbaits under birds in cocodrie within a mile of the marina today and me and my dad lost two fish back to back. I was wondering if y'all could help me figure out what we lost.

I hooked into the fish and it immediately began pulling about 8lbs of drag straight out with basically zero head shakes, I slowed it down by maxing out my 11lbs of drag since I knew it wasn't a trout. It immediately turned straight at the boat and started to outrun my 30"/crank retrieve as fast as I could reel before throwing the hook on a turn to the left.

This happened to both of us within 40 seconds of one another. I'm guessing a jack, what do y'all think? The school dispersed right afterwards so we didn't hook into anymore.

Were you cut off or broke off? If cut off maybe Bluefish? They should be getting thicker this time of year.

Nevermind, I just saw it pulled the hook

Yea I was using a shimano SLX DC 151DC 7:2:1 30" retrieve with 30lb braid connected to a 3/4oz carolina rig with 30lb flouro on a SS J-Hook with a saltwater assassin chartreuse minnow. The oysters are savage in cocodrie, you have to have 30lb flourocarbon if you are gonna carolina rig on the bottom.

If I am trout fishing and something big hooks on I just break it off. Now if the trout were not even hinting at biting I might play with it.
