I understand this was a spear fishing trip... but if he had a dive buddy with him, at the worst, your question would be answered. At best, the guy would be on the dock instead of missing.

I saw where the Coast Guard has suspended their search.

Yeah the search was suspended. We had 6 guys out there all day Sunday looking for him but the bad weather really hindered their efforts. Terribly sad news for his family
