So I want to buy my first handgun with my tax return and i'm looking for some advice. I want a 9mm for sure because of the cheap(er) ammo and i have big hands so i want a meaty grip.

So far i have shot a Glock 22 .40 and a Springfield xd9 9mm. I didn't care for the grip on the Glock and the Springfield dug into the base knuckle of my thumb and was uncomfortable afer 25 rounds.

Looking in the $500 range BTW.
Any Suggestions appreciated.

There's quite a few threads on here that have alot of good info on buying your first handgun. Given your criteria I'd suggest a Baretta 92fs

step your game up and scoop a 1911 .45... best decision you'll ever make.

I would also suggest beretta, but not the 92, I would go px4 storm. It comes with adjustable backs so you can make it fit your hand better. It is a great shooting gun too, the rotating barrel makes it have what feels tO be virtually no recoil.

I love the 1911 but i plan on burning through some rounds and don't think a 45 is the best financial decision for me.

Sorry for the Germans thread too. I've been away from the boards for some time.

Well what do you want your first handgun to be for? Protection? Target practice? Taking out random zombies when your primary fails?

Targets and Zombies are the only things i have considered it being used for but i guess my answer would have to be all of the above

The Stoeger Cougar is comparable for less $$ as well. Used to be the Beretta Cougar back in the 90s, same gun now just made in Turkey instead of Italy.

You seem to be on the right track by trying out two very popular platforms and it sounds like you know what you want caliber-wise. The only step left is to find a gun that fits your hand, no one here can tell you that. You have to go to Jim's/Hebert's/etc. and hold a bunch of guns (then buy from somewhere else). What we can do is if you find a gun you like you can come on here and ask about it and half of us will tell you how much we love it while the other half dogs it. Google is your friend. A million people have been in your shoes and asked the same questions you are and will ask, and they have been answered by very knowledgeable people. Handguns are like shoes, they all protect your feet, what you get depends on what you plan to do in them and how you like them to look and feel.

Popular and reputable platforms:
Smith and Wesson M&P series
Heckler and Koch USP series
Glock
Springfield XD series
FN Herstal FNP series
Beretta 92FS
Sig Sauer P2XX
CZ75 series
Browning/FN Highpower

Pick from this list and you won't be disappointed.

Beretta 92FS. It was my first handgun and is still my favorite.

Sounds like the Berettas are the forum favorite. I'll be going to a few local places to hold some tomorrow and see how they fit.
Thanks for the help everybody.
As far as the actual purchasing goes should i stay away from chain stores (Academy) and go local or does it matter?

Beretta makes a really good gun

See if you can find a used H&K USP or a used Sig P226

I got a used sig P226 for $500. It's pretty awesome

I would also see how the FNH feels to you.

I buy most of my guns at academy. If they have them in stock their prices are always better. Got that Beretta 92FS at Academy

I've held the SR9C does seem to fit my hand nicely and is in the running but I don't care for the loaded safety feature. The thing that raises up when it's loaded... not sure how i feel about that yet.

do you own a SR9C? how do you feel about that feature?
