The Abu Garcia Promax is currently $10 more than the H2O mettle combo. The Lew's American hero combo is the same price as the Mettle combo.

The big difference between the Mettle and other reels in that price point is the Mettle has an aluminum frame. The Pro Max is a fantastic reel, but it is a graphite frame. The Lew's American Hero is also a graphite frame.

Graphite frames are plenty strong enough to handle anything you throw at it. It's not like they'll snap in half on you if you hook into a big fish. The thing I've always read was that they flex more than solid aluminum frames. So, it's causes more stress and wear on other parts of the reel. I believe the Mettle also has a weaker drag system than the Pro Max. But, many people believe the Mettle holds a solid advantage over other reels in that price point because of the aluminum frame alone.

Does the Mettle still only come in 6.3:1 gear ratio?

I have an H20 Mettle Express Baitcaster, its a decent littler reel for the $40 I paid for it. Anyone tried their spinning reels? I need a new one for inshore saltwater.

I bought my original Mettles on sale years ago expecting nothing more than a few season, then throw away, wash rinse repeat. Damn things just will not stop working and seem to never age.

Hmm, not sure about the gear ratio. I was unaware that the mettle has an aluminum frame, unlike the Promax and American Hero. I wonder how the other components of the reels compare? In other words, I wonder if H2O maybe sacrificed some quality on gears, bearings, etc. in order to have an aluminum frame and not increase the price.

I had to look it up, but it wasn't hard to find. I remember reading this breakdown of it a while back. Seems to be pretty good build quality.

I have a Silver Max that's got to be close to 15 years old. I think I've cleaned it twice (since I really just started getting into reel maintenance a couple years ago) and it's still going strong. I also have the Pro Max 3 and it has operated flawlessly. But I don't really use them a lot compared to my other reels.

I can't say anything about the Mettle quality other than what I've read. I've used them before, but have never owned one.

I went ahead and bought the Ethos HD Inshore baitcast rod yesterday . I have a bad wrist and needed something a little lighter.
